Dr. William E. Scully, 87, of Terre Haute passed away Sunday, May 7, 2017 in Providence Healthcare. He was born February 6, 1930 in Cincinnati, OH to Leo H. Scully and Margaret Moorman Scully.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Mary Lois "Willie" Willenbrink Scully, children, William Edward Scully, Jr. (Donna), Mary Patricia Garvin, Margaret Ann Storey (Allan), Martha Jean Marshall (John), Rebecca Ann Foxworthy (Jeff), Katherine Virginia Cuniffe (Brent), and Kevin Louis Scully (Amber); daughter-in-law, Jannette Scully; sister, Mary Ann Comer; brother-in-law, Daniel J. Finch; grandchildren, William Edward Scully III (Anna), Elizabeth June Scully, Jamie Marie Dickerson (William), Leah Ann Garvin, Sarah Elizabeth Garvin, Nicholas Allan Storey, Samuel Louis Storey, Abby Leigh Scully, Margaret Elizabeth Scully, Emily Ann Scully, Lucile Mae Marshall, Michelle Lois Marshall, Owen Duffy Cuniffe, Anton James Cuniffe, Michael William Scully, Henry Louis Scully, and Sophia Marie Scully; many nieces and nephews; and many great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Daniel John Scully; brother-in-law, Thomas J. Comer; and sister-in-law, Katherine Elizabeth Finch.

Dr. Scully attended St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. He graduated from Xavier University in Cincinnati in 1951.

He spent two years in the United States Army serving at Landstul Hospital in Germany.

Returning to the states in 1954 he enrolled in The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. After graduation in 1958, he did a year internship at Cincinnati General Hospital followed by a two year residency in pediatrics at Cincinnati Children's Hospital where he spent one year as Chief Resident. In 1961 Dr. Scully moved his family to Terre Haute, IN and began the practice of pediatric medicine with Dr. Werner Meyn and Dr. Thomas Conway.

In 1968, despite no help from the Indiana State Board of Health, but with the encouragement of Chief Administrator of Union Hospital Joe Mackey and the help of Dr. Rodger West, Drs. Conway and Scully opened the first NICU in the state of Indiana at Union Hospital in Terre Haute. This effort reduced the newborn mortality rate by more than 50 percent.

Dr. Scully served as Union Hospital Chief of Medical and Dental Staff in 1984 and 1990. He was an exceptional teacher of pediatrics to the residence in Union Hospitals Family practice residency program and also a member of the clinical faculty at the IU school of medicine until his retirement in February of 2000.

In 1992, Dr. Scully was awarded the first Weinbaum award. This prestigious award was established to recognize physicians who provide extraordinary leadership and contribution to the care of patients at Union Hospital.

He served as President of the Medical and Dental Staff of Union Hospital in 1993. The status of Emeritus Member of Medical and Dental Staff at Union Hospital was awarded to him in March of 2000. Dr. Scully served numerous terms as Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at Union Hospital. During his forty years of practice a great deal of time, effort and travel was spent as a member of countless committees and boards at both state and national levels.

After retirement Dr. and Mrs. Scully spent several weeks in India at a school for handicapped children. One joy in their lives was the numerous medical trips to Honduras with St. Joseph University Parish. "Sometimes we think Honduras did more for us than we did for them."
Dr. Scully has been an active member of St. Patrick Parish since 1961. He was an avid gardener and a truly dedicated bridge player.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 12, 2017 in St. Patrick Catholic Church with Father Dan Bedel officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. on Thursday, May 11, 2017 in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street with a rosary service at 7:30 p.m. Memorial contribution may be made to the charity of your choice.
