William H. Payton, Jr., 94, of Terre Haute passed away Sunday afternoon, August 9, 2015 at Meadows Manor East. He was a retired Chief Warrant Officer with the United States Air Force where he served from 1939 to 1965. William was born August 21, 1921 in San Antonio, Texas to William H. Payton, Sr. and Zora Beam Payton.
Survivors include his son, Richard Payton of Terre Haute; and a grandson, Marcus Payton of Terre Haute. He was preceded in death by his parents.
After William's retirement from the military, he worked for the United States Postal Service for seven years and then for The Indiana State Police Department for 10 years. He loved to work with electronics in his spare time repairing radios, scanners and many other devices. William was very active in the Terre Haute Red Cross and was a member of the Ham Radio Operators Club in Terre Haute since 1939.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, August 13, 2015 in Union Cemetery in Brazil with Mark Grayless officiating with burial immediately following. There is no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street.
