William Edward Bramble, formerly of Terre Haute, Indiana, passed away peacefully at his residence in Tybee Island, Georgia, on Saturday, November 15, 2014 surrounded by his family. He was born in southern Vigo County on June 25, 1921 to Arthur Bramble and Ann Kelty Bramble. Bill was local business owner for over 20 years having owned and operated Bill's Bar located at 19th and Locust Streets.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Barbara Martz Bramble; children, James Bramble and his wife, Bev, of West Terre Haute; Marianne Bramble of Tybee Island, GA; Claire Shanks and her husband, Jeff, of Yardley, PA; Paula Dowd and her husband, James, of Grifton, NC and William Bramble II of Canton, GA; grandchildren: Ellen Stolyar and her husband, Yegor, of St. Simons Island, Ga: William Long of Tybee Island, GA: Mauri Long of Tybee Island, GA; Leslie May and her husband, William, of Yardley, PA; Corrine Dowd of Grifton, NC and Noah Bramble of Canton, GA; great-grandchildren: Nicholas and Andrew Stolyar of St. Simons Island; Camille Truell of Tybee Island, Ga; and Lilyana and Lorabell Shanks of Yardley, PA; and his brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Suzie Bramble of Terre Haute. He is also survived by a large and loving extended family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Ann Bramble, siblings, Veronica Bramble, Earl Bramble, Joe Bramble, Cissie Williams, Jack Bramble and Rita Kendall; as well as his beloved granddaughter, Laura Marie Shanks; and daughter-in-law Ruth Ellen Bramble.
Bill attended St. Ann's Grade School and graduated from Gerstmeyer High School. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II in Italy and was also attached to the British Forces in North Africa. He was actively involved in local politics and served as Vigo County Recorder for two terms and was Sugar Creek Township Trustee for several terms. He was a member of St. Leonard Catholic Church of West Terre Haute, St. Ann Catholic Church of Terre Haute and St. Michael Catholic Church of Tybee Island, Georgia.
Bill also was a member of Knights of Columbus- Saint Mother Theodore Guerin Council #541, Lawton Byrum Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #972 and Krietenstein American Legion Post #104. He was a gentle, kind and generous man.
Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 12:05 P.M., Monday, November 24, 2014 at St. Benedict Catholic Church, 111 South 9th Street, with Father Matthew Malek, O.F.M. Conv. officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery with Military Graveside Honors provided by VFW Post #972. Visitation is scheduled for 4:00-6:00 P.M. on Sunday, November 23rd at Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street.
