Vern Woods Fellows, 81, of Terre Haute passed away Tuesday evening, April 17, 2018 in Union Hospital. He was the former President and Owner of B & A Electric of Terre Haute. Vern was born in Terre Haute on January 29, 1937.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Janice Elaine Sawyers Fellows; two daughters, Karen Henderson (John) of Terre Haute and Elizabeth Atkinson (Brian) of Fishers, IN; three grandchildren, Lucas Steward (Kenzie Roby), Logan Steward and Taylor Lauri; three step-grandchildren, Andrea Thurlow (Taylor), Emily Atkinson and Sam Atkinson; a brother-in-law, John Sawyers (Elizabeth); and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Ethel Fellows.
Vern was a 1955 graduate of Wiley High School and received an Electrical Engineering Degree from Rose Polytechnic Institute of Technology (now Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology) in 1962. He started his career as a registered Professional Engineer having worked for Sanborn Electric and Ethyl Visqueen before joining B & A Electric. He was a member of the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) where he served in various capacities including Terre Haute Board of Directors, Indiana Chapter Board Treasurer and President and as Governor of the Central Indiana Chapter.
Vern was active in many Terre Haute organizations including Union Hospital Foundation Board of Directors where he was one of the founding members and a former President of the Board. He was also Chairman of the 1st Union Hospital Foundation Golf Outing. Additionally, he was a past President of the Francis Vigo Chapter, Indiana Society of Professional Engineers where he served as past chapter State Director and State Scholarship Chairman. Vern was also very involved with Rose-Hulman having served on its Board of Trustees, President's Council, Board of Associates and was honored as a Moench Fellow.
Vern's memberships included Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity where he served on the Board of Directors of the Indiana Gamma Gamma Chapter and maintained many special friendships throughout the years; a 50 year member of the Downtown Terre Haute Rotary Club where he was a Paul Harris Fellow; past member of the Fire Protection Association; Goodwill Industries Board of Directors where he served as President from 1989-1999; Terre Haute Taxpayers Association; AERO Club; and Country Club of Terre Haute. Vern was a very active member of the United Methodist Church and most recently had been attending Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church. Vern loved spending time with his family especially with his grandchildren, was an avid golfer and loved bowling as well.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM, Saturday, April 21, 2018 at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church, 3050 East Davis Ave., with Pastor Dennis Ticen officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is scheduled for Friday from 5:00-8:00 PM in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street.
