Thomas Warren Roberts, 90, of Seelyville passed away Wednesday, May 18, 2016. He was born August 11, 1925 in Indianapolis to Thomas and Mary (Oden) Roberts.
Survivors include his beautiful and loving wife of nearly 69 years, Donna Jean (Reich) Roberts; five children: Cindy Roberts of Carmel, IN, Valeri (Jim) Chapman of Terre Haute, Thomas (Doris) Roberts of Indianapolis, James Roberts of Seelyville, and Cheryl Roberts of Asheville, NC; five grandchildren: Brent (Julie) Johnson, Lauren (Jorge) Caso, Jamey Chapman, Kimberly Roberts, and Daryl Roberts; and four great-grandchildren: Adam, Samuel, and Elliott Johnson and Jairo Caso. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Duane Roberts.
Tom was a 1943 graduate of Arsenal Technical High School in Indianapolis and received his BS degree from the College of Business at Butler University in 1950. He proudly served his country in WW II in the Aircorps Troop Carrier Command, Guam Air Depot, Pacific Theater and in Korea in the Air Force as a fighter pilot. In addition, Tom served in the Air Force Reserves. His highest military rank was Captain.
Tom had been self-employed since 1953 in Terre Haute and owned Enterprise Metal Products, Enterprise Realty Corporation, and Enterprise Oil and Associates. He served on the Vigo County School Board in Lost Creek Township in 1960 and helped sell bonds to establish Lost Creek Elementary School. He was elected to the Vigo County Council in 1966. In addition, Tom was a 10 year member of the Terre Haute Rotary Club, a long time member of the Country Club of Terre Haute, Elks Club, and the Pachyderm Club. He received certificates for 50 years of service with the Shrine and Masonic Lodge. Tom was often seen playing Bridge at the Terre Haute Bridge Center and earned enough points to become a Life Master.
Tom also contributed to his community by serving as a Seelyville Volunteer Fireman and on behalf of the city of Terre Haute, managed the Industrial Park.
In 1964, he was a National Delegate to the Republican Convention. Tom often joked that one of his greatest accomplishments was that he was a notary public.
Tom loved spending time with his family engaging in reading, playing golf, gardening, fishing, sports, and politics. His favorite place to enjoy and share was his vacation home named Rest and Be Thankful on Lake Manitou, Ontario, Canada. He was an extraordinary story and joke teller, as well as a huge Civil War, history, and world affairs buff. He enjoyed sharing his wealth of knowledge with others.
A celebration of Toms wonderful and fulfilling life will be held at a future date to be announced. A separate, private ceremony with military honors will be held for the family. Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street.
