Thomas E. Burkett, 88 of Terre Haute, Indiana passed away August 4, 2018. Tom was born in Hammond, Indiana on Sept 3rd, 1929 to John C. Burkett and Vivian Haase Burkett. He was a graduate of Otter Creek High School and Indiana State University. He retired from The Horace Mann Insurance Company in 2001 after a 35 year career as a Senior Account Executive and was a Chartered Life Underwriter. Prior to working in the insurance industry, he was a long time educator and administrator, working in Vigo, Vermillion, and Sullivan County schools, with teaching positions at Sarah Scott Jr. High School, Fairbanks High School and Principal at Dana High School. He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during the Korean War.
Tom married the love of his life Anne Walsh Burkett on February 23, 1952. He is survived by Anne and their five children. Robert Burkett (Linda) of Clinton, Rebecca Kaylor (Jim) of Greenwood, Mary Creamer of Terre Haute, Martha Lorenzano, (Mark) of Terre Haute, and John Burkett (Nancy) of Terre Haute; grandchildren, Thomas Burkett (Amy Massey), Charles Burkett, Jackie Striegel (Shaun), Suzanne Gorgas (Mike), Jamie Burkett, Katie Sonnenburg (Dan), Jason Kaylor (Jenna), Anne Geary (Eric), Anthony Creamer (Greta Davis), Maria Stumpf (James), Lisa McKain (Shawn), Adam Burkett, Dennis Burkett (Sara) and Daniel Burkett; and fifteen great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Jack William Burkett and sister Ruth Burkett Baker.
Following his retirement, he obtained the designation of Master Gardener and was involved with the local group. He was also active with the Farrington Grove Historical District and the local Kiwanis Chapter. He was a long time member of St. Joseph University Parish.
Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, August 8, 2018 in St. Joseph University Parish, 113 South 5th Street, with Friar Savio Manavalan, OFM Conv. officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday from 4:00-8:00 PM with a Prayer Service at 7:30 PM in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street.
