Susan Gans Mccarthy

July 29, 1929 — February 20, 2023

Susan Gans McCarthy, 93, of Terre Haute, Indiana, died February 20, 2023, surrounded by what she has always described as, in her happy and positive way, her five talented, unique, and perfect children. She was born in Colton, Washington, on July 29th, 1929. Although she was remarkable in so many ways, she will most be remembered for her unconditional love for her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, William G. McCarthy, a son, Billy, lost in childhood, her brother Michael Gans, and his wife Mary Louise. Survivors include her children Mary McCarthy (Charles Bales), Isabel McCarthy (Rod Kirk), Dan McCarthy (Susie Marvel), Joe McCarthy (Mary Ann), and Susan Reynolds (Trevor);  grandchildren Alison Bales (Will Crotty), Sarah Bales, J.D. Bales (Jan-Marie), James Bales (Jordan Hensley), Christina Collins (Brett), Katie Kirk (Andrew Rogier), Kevin McCarthy (Bethany), Regan McCarthy (Erich Martin), BJ McCarthy (Sara), Francesca McCarthy, and Reagan Reynolds (Nate Jackman), plus twelve great-grandchildren, and her brother, Ray Gans (Joanne.)

Susan was a life-long learner and had many talents.  She wrote her own trust documents for her estate, was a stockbroker in her early years, and dabbled in timber sales, oil exploration, solar energy, wildlife habitats, and tax sales. In 1999, Susan and Bill purchased 93 acres of woodland near Staunton. It became known as “Nature’s Return.” Susan put the property into a trust to protect the woods and land for future generations. She created a small public sanctuary there, calling it “The Forgiveness Wall,” where visitors can come to contemplate forgiveness. Susan said, “I truly believe that the best path for a good and happy life is to decide to love—to offer love unselfishly.” Those fortunate enough to know her got to experience her aura of loving kindness every day.

Susan was enthusiastically involved in politics, was the regional coordinator for Senator Birch Bayh, and was a  precinct committeeperson for over forty years. A long-time bridge club member, she organized a book club that has lasted for decades, and was a faithful member of Saint Patrick’s Church.
