Sister Mary Helen Nixon O.C.D.

Sister Mary Helen Nixon, 84, a member of the Carmelite Monastery Terre Haute, IN died September 12, 2022. Sister was born in Carshalton Surry, United Kingdom. She attended St. Philomena’s Convent School in England.

Sister Mary Helen recognizing a call to the contemplative life joined the Carmelite Monastery in Chichester, England, where she was known as Sr. Mary Augustine.  She made her profession of vows as a Carmelite Nun on May 1, 1962.

In 1994 the Carmel of Chichester closed due to a lack of new members and the remaining nuns transferred to various other monasteries. As the prioress of the Chichester Monastery, Sr. Mary Helen arranged for the placing the nuns in Monasteries of their choice. Sister then requested to transfer to the monastery in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Sister Mary Helen served the Community in various capacities, as formator of Novices and she also served on the Council of the monastery for many years.

Her parents were Lawrence and Amy Gwendoline Nixon, her brothers Fr. Geoffrey Nixon, John Nixon and her sister, Rosemary Nixon, all preceded her in death.

Visitation will be held at the Carmelite Monastery chapel: Saturday September 17, 2022, 9:00- 10:45 AM, EDT, followed by the funeral Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM
 EDT. Interment will take place after the Mass in the Carmelite Monastery Cemetery.

Callahan and Hughes are in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Carmelite Monastery.
