Shirley Anne Bishop

September 10, 1927 — November 24, 2020

Shirley A. Bishop, 93, of Terre Haute, died Tuesday, November 24, 2020 at her son’s home in Terre Haute.  She was born September 10, 1927 in Marion, Iowa to Clifford P. and Rowena C. Lewellen.  Shirley is a native of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, graduating from McKinley High School.  At the time of her passing, she was a   resident of independent living at Westminster Village in Terre Haute.

Survivors are her children, Ronald (Marsha) Danielson of Terre Haute, Janet (Patrick) Coogan of Bettendorf, Iowa, Barbara (Matthew) Hays of Zionsville, Indiana, Steven (Lori) Danielson of Terre Haute and step-son John (Kelly) Bishop of Ft. Worth, Texas.  She is also survived by a sister, Suzanne Zarley of Des Moines, Iowa, 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert W. Bishop and a brother William E. Lewellen.

Shirley graduated from Iowa State University and was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority.  She was a 50-year member and past President of P.E.O. and a former board member of the Terre Haute Day Nursery.  She volunteered for a number of years as a surgical hostess at Union Hospital.  She and her husband were former members of the Country Club of Terre Haute.  While raising her children in Fairfield, Iowa with her first husband, she was a member of the city Park Board, a member of the Women’s Club, an active member of PTA, and a member of the Fairfield Country Club.

Shirley enjoyed playing bridge, reading multiple books weekly and the Wall Street Journal daily.  She expressed her creative abilities through painting, colored pencil drawings and knitting.  One of her passions was traveling to Door County, Wisconsin with family and friends.  She was always ready to discuss and debate current events, share her incredible and detailed recollection of world history, and was profoundly interested in her family and friends.

Her family would like to thank the staff of the Union Hospital stroke unit, VNA-Hospice, Dr. Jon Stockrahm and her in-home caregivers for their kind and compassionate care.  A special mention goes to her friend, Mary Halstead who was helpful during her time of illness.  Appreciation is also extended to the staff of Westminster Village who made her life enjoyable and to her many friends who she valued.

According to her wishes, no service is planned and cremation will be conducted by Callahan and Hughes Funeral Home.  Due to Covid concerns, visitation is not planned.  Online condolences can be made at www.callahanandhughes.com.  A family celebration of her life is planned at a later date in Door County, Wisconsin.  Memorial contributions can be made to Union Hospital Foundation, 1606 North 7 th Street, Terre Haute, IN 47804 or to VNA-Hospice, 400 8 th Ave., Terre Haute, IN 47804 or to or to the charity of your choice.
