Sally Russell, beloved daughter, sister, friend, and shining light to all who knew her, passed away peacefully on Friday evening, July 5, 2024. She was known for her infectious laughter, her kind heart, and her unwavering positivity. Sally embraced life wholeheartedly, finding joy in the simplest of moments and spreading happiness wherever she went.
Born on February 22, 1935 in Terre Haute to Frank M. Ryan and Mary Jane Miller Ryan. Her husband, Jerry A. Russell preceded her in death in 2008. Sally grew up surrounded by love and laughter. She was a great lover of animals. On any given day, Sally could be seen walking her and her neighbors pets around her neighborhood. She will be remembered for her warm smile, her genuine compassion, and her ability to brighten even the darkest of days.
Sally is survived by her loving family, including her children, Jennifer Sandlin Sewell of Edgewater, Maryland and Mathew Ryan Sandlin of Terre Haute; stepsons, Michael C. Russell of Terre Haute and Jon C. Russell of Brazil, Indiana; and 14 grandchildren, Ryan Sandlin, Zachary Sandlin, Hana Sandlin, Cody Sandlin, Noah Sandlin, Khloe Sandlin, Savannah Sandlin, Carrie Sewell Roberts, Sarah Sewell Tippin, Amanda Sewell, Brandon Russell, Lindsay Russell Jeffers, Austin Russell, and Madison Russell. Also surviving are 10 great-grandchildren, and her nieces and nephew Cindy Durham of Rosedale, IN, Tina Ryan of Rockford, IL, Patrick J. Ryan, Jr. of South Pasadena, FL, Virginia L. Smith and Sally Jane Lowery both of Terre Haute. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by a son, Michael R. Sandlin; stepson Brett E. Russell; brother, Patrick J. Ryan; and her sister, Mary Frances Smith.
Sally touched the hearts of all who knew her and will be deeply missed. Her spirit will live on in the memories and stories shared by those whose lives she touched. May she rest in peace, forever remembered for her love of life and her infectious smile.
Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, July 10, 2024 in St. Joseph University Parish with Padre Bob Showers officiating. Private burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday from 4:00-7:00 PM in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Terre Haute Humane Society or the Gibson Family Center for Hospice Care in her honor.
