TERRE HAUTE – Ruth Elizabeth Morris, 89, of Terre Haute, Indiana, passed away on December 15 at Providence Healthcare at St. Mary of the Woods. She was born on August 27, 1931 in Terre Haute (along with her twin sister) to Claude C. and Elaine Neal Champion.
Ruth graduated from Gerstmeyer Tech High School in 1951. In addition to raising her three children, she worked for 15 years as a teacher’s assistant in the Vigo County School Corporation and retired from Reuben H. Donnelley. She also served as secretary at Barbour Avenue U.M. Church. She and her husband served as youth leaders at Barbour Avenue. She most recently was a member of Maple Avenue UM Church where she belonged to the Circle 1 UM Women.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Henry “Jay” Morris, five brothers and two sisters. She is survived by her children: Steve Morris (Kathy), Kevin Morris, and Susan Skelton (John); and three grandchildren: Travis Morris, Megan Morris and Hannah Morris and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Her brother, James Champion of Terre Haute also survives.
Ruth was an artistic person and her interests included painting, drawing, and crocheting. Her greatest love was music. She played in her high school band, sang in the church choir, and Triads music organization and loved to play piano.
Services will be held on Saturday, December 19 at 10:00 a.m. at Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home in Terre Haute with pastors David Rockhill, Ed Gladish and Linda Smock officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to service. Interment will follow in the Mausoleum at Roselawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Maple Avenue UM Church or your local humane shelter.
Ruth’s family would like to thank all the staff and caregivers at Providence for their care over the past two years and especially those who cared for her in her final hours.
