ROBERT A. "BOB" MARTIN Robert A. "Bob" Martin, 82, of Terre Haute died early Friday morning, December 6, 2013 in his residence. He was a Professor at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College for over 36 years. Bob was born June 2, 1931 in Chicago, Illinois to Irish immigrants, John Martin of County Limerick and Bridie Joyce Martin of County Galway. Survivors include his loving wife of 52 years, Kathleen Sweeney Martin; four children, Michael Martin and his wife, Diana, of Oak Hill, VA, Bridget Martin of Fishers, IN, Timothy Martin and his wife, Alfega, of Zionsville, IN and Sarah Martin Easton and her husband, Brad, of Carmel, IN; eight grandchildren, Katherine & John Martin, Alyssa & Ashley Easton, Samantha, Timmy & Robby Martin and Annalise Bielefeld; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Jack Martin and Bill Martin; and an infant daughter, Therese. Bob attended Quincy College (IL) where he received his Bachelor's degree and DePaul University where he received his Master's degree. He continued post graduate and PhD. studies at Indiana University. He was a Korean War veteran having served with the U.S. Army in Heidelberg, Germany. As a very active member of the former St. Ann Catholic Church, Bob was president of the Parish Council, head of the Bingo Team and sang in the church choir for 40 years. Most recently he was a member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church. Bob's teaching career started in the fall of 1963 and continued until his retirement in 1999. In addition to his career at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods he also was a director of the Women's External Degree Program. After retirement, Bob enjoyed traveling with his wife, Kathleen, to Mexico, Latin America, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Ireland. He was a Spanish language enthusiast having pretty much self taught himself so that he could speak Spanish when he was traveling. Bob was a volunteer at the Vigo County Public Library with the "English as a 2nd Language Program" was one of the original coaches of the Terre Haute Soccer League and was a member of AAUP. A Memorial Mass is scheduled for 4:00 P.M., Thursday, December 12, 2013 in St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church with Father Rick Ginther officiating. Visitation is scheduled prior to services on Thursday from 2:00-4:00 P.M. Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street.
