Robert T. Jones

Robert Jones, 100, of Venice, FL and previously of Terre Haute, IN, passed away peacefully on February 25, 2025, in Venice, FL. 

Born August 10, 1924, to Harold and Lillian Jones, Bob was one of eight children. He was born in Washington, IN but spent most of his life in Terre Haute, IN. In 1953, he married Carolyn VanGilder, and they had two children, Kathy Elliott (Bill) and Karey Cain (Mike). Bob is survived by his sister, Audrey Taylor. 

Bob served as a Corporal in the Marine Corp during World War II. Stationed in the Pacific Theatre, he participated in many battles and earned numerous medals and honors. This led him to become a life-long member of the American Legion and VFW, and he participated in events in those organizations up until his passing. After the war, Bob joined the Postal Service, retiring in 1972. He then worked for the Teamsters Union as well as engaging in various other professions. Bob was an avid gardener and card player and enjoyed fishing and golfing with his grandsons. He loved to stay busy, and his mantra was to keep moving. 

Bob played an instrumental role in the upbringing of his three grandsons, Chad Shaffer, Justin Shuler (Lisa) and Daniel Shaffer and adored spending time with his great grandchildren – Shaelyn, Chad, Seth, Liam, Tyler, AJ, and Gracie. 

Flowers are welcome, but if you prefer a donation, the family recommends Bob’s favorite charity, the Wounded Warrier Project. 

Funeral Services will be held at 1 pm, Friday, March 7, 2025, in the Callahan and Hughes Funeral Home, where friends are invited to gather from 11 am until the time of the funeral. He will be laid to rest with Military Honors in Highland Lawn Cemetery, Terre Haute, Indiana beside his beloved wife, Carolyn.
