Robert Graig Fischer, known as “Graig”, passed away on September 17, 2023, in Sarasota, Florida. Graig was born in Terre Haute, Indiana on November 15, 1964, to Marilynn J. Fischer (Hirschfeld) and Robert J. Fischer. He has three sisters, Lynn DeGeorge, Carol Fischer and Marcia Fischer.
Graig attended St. Margaret Mary school, Sarah Scott and then graduated from Terre Haute South Vigo H. S. in 1983. He went on to attend Ball State University on a swimming scholarship. Graig qualified for the State Swimming Finals every year from age 10-18 and represented Terre Haute South Vigo H.S. during four years of attendance. He was awarded Honorable Mention, High School All American and qualified for Junior Nationals in 1983 and Senior Nationals in 1984.
In 1984 Graig returned to Terre Haute and began his coaching career. Swimming and helping kids were Graig’s pursuits. Being a Swim Coach took Graig from Indiana, to Colorado to Florida, St. Thomas and the UAE. He coached many year-round competitive age group teams as well as High School teams. He was honored as Coach of the Year in every state and sometimes appointed the District Coach.
Graig was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his 3 sisters, many aunts, uncles and cousins. Additionally, he has 3 nephews; Thomas Andress, R. Nicholas Andress and Michael Andress, (all from Colorado) and 3 nieces; Tara DeGeorge in Louisiana, Clair DeGeorge in Minnesota, and Leah DeGeorge in Florida.
Services for Graig will be held at Calvary Cemetery Chapel in Terre Haute on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at 9 AM.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that donations be made to the American Diabetes Association, National Kidney Foundation or any organization supporting children in need to participate in sports.
