Monsignor Lawrence J. Moran, Jr., 91 of Terre Haute died Saturday evening, May 4, 2019 at Providence HealthCare. He was a Catholic Priest for 67 years, most recently as the Chaplain of the Carmelite Monastery of Terre Haute and also as Pastor Emeritus at St. Patrick Catholic Church. He was born May 8, 1927 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Lawrence Joseph Moran, Sr. and Loretta Cecilia Brouillette Moran.
Survivors include his two brothers, James P. Moran and his wife, Judy, and David Moran and his wife, Jeanne, all of Indianapolis; his sister, Patricia Carter of St. Paul Hermitage of Beech Grove, Indiana; and several nieces and nephews.
Monsignor Moran spent 12 years of study at Saint Meinrad Seminary in Saint Meinrad, IN. He graduated from minor and major seminary at Saint Meinrad and was ordained May 3, 1952 by Archbishop Paul Schulte. His priestly ministry led him to serve at several churches as Associate Pastor: 1952-1955 at St. Michael Parish, Indianapolis, 1955-1957 at St. Ann Parish, Terre Haute, 1957-1959 at St. Bartholomew Parish, Columbus and 1959-1967 at St. Andrew Parish, Richmond; and as Pastor: 1967-1985 at both St. Joseph Parish, Rockville and Immaculate Conception Mission Parish, Montezuma and 1985-2005 at St. Patrick Parish, Terre Haute.
Additionally, he taught at Cathedral High School, Indianapolis 1952-1955, Schulte High School, Terre Haute 1957-1959 and was the founder and chaplain of John Paul II Catholic High School of Terre Haute.
Ever committed to "spreading the Word of the Lord", Monsignor Moran hosted the television program in Indianapolis "Faith to Live By" for TV Channel 8 for 8 years and "Focus on Faith" for TV Channel 6 for 8 years. Monsignor Moran also hosted weekly radio shows in Rockville, IN for 18 years and in Terre Haute for radio station WHOJ since 2002. Additionally, Monsignor Moran conducted many retreats at Fatima Retreat House, Indianapolis and was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus with St. Mother Theodore Guerin Council #541. He was the recipient of the 2005 Career Achievement Award at the Celebrating Catholic School Values dinner and was given the title of Monsignor by Pope John Paul II on August 26, 1997. He also received the Sagamore of the Wabash Award from Governor Frank O'Bannon on May 5, 2002 for his work for over 40 years helping Alcoholic Anonymous members. Finally, Monsignor was known for his unwavering devotion to the Blessed Mother and to the defense of the sanctity of human life from conception to natural death.
Visitation for Msgr. Moran is scheduled for 4:00-8:00 PM, Tuesday, May 7, 2019 in St. Patrick Catholic Church, 1807 Poplar Street, with a Vigil Service and Rosary to be offered beginning at 7:30 PM.
Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, May 8th at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 1807 Poplar Street, Terre Haute, IN. with one hour of visitation preceding beginning at 10:00 AM. The celebrant of the funeral Mass will be Archbishop Charles C. Thompson. Burial will be in the Priests' Circle at Calvary Cemetery, Terre Haute. Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street.
