Peter Fowler Hopkins Priest

Peter Fowler Hopkins Priest, 91, of Terre Haute, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 13, 2025 at The Gibson Family Center for Hospice. He was born on July 28, 1933, in Chicago, to Robert Franklin Priest II and Sarah Louise Hopkins Priest.

Peter is survived by his children: Catherine Eberly (Bruce) of Terre Haute, Peter Priest II (Yelena) of Terre Haute, and Cynthia Priest of Terre Haute; grandchildren: Christopher, Mindy, April, David, and Kristen; great grandchildren: Brennan, Casey, Jared, Francesca, Scarlett, and Olivia; and a twin brother: David Fowler Hopkins Priest.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Charity Johnson; a brother, Robert F. Priest III; and the mother of his children, Janice Priest Phillips.

Peter worked as a professor at Rose-Hulman for 36 years, teaching Russian to many students over his tenure. He developed the Russian Language Technical Translator Program at Rose-Hulman that was copied by many universities. He was faculty advisor to the Rose-Hulman student photography club which led him to become the group photographer on an exchange program to India. These photographs won Peter several awards. Peter loved to travel and took many worldwide trips to different countries, often to Russia. He led students, his Memorial United Methodist Church members, and business colleagues on these adventures. He shared his love of travel with family and friends. Peter led a life of adventure and fearlessness which carried him through his vision loss. He maintained his independence and unstoppable spirit, boarding the city bus or crossing the street to Baeslers. He continues his adventures in the Heavens.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 19, 2025, at Memorial United Methodist Church. A funeral ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, at the church. Peter will be laid to rest at a later date in Elmwood Cemetery in River Grove, IL.
