Nellie Pent Hess

Nellie Pent Hess (Nell), 98, passed away in her sleep during the afternoon of Friday, August 26, 2022 in her residence.

She was born to Joe and Mary Pent in Benton, Illinois on July 3, 1924.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law Robin and Curtis Coffee

of Indianapolis, a special niece Jennie Otterson of Dandridge, TN, extended family out of state and a wonderful, supportive group of friends.

Nell was preceded in death by her parents, five siblings and her husband Roy after 56 years of marriage.

Her beloved canine companion for the past eight and one-half years, Scooter, passed away just two days before Nell.

She had a successful career as a hairstylist for many years in Illinois and Indiana and was the owner of the First Lady Beauty Salon in Terre Haute.

Nell was a member of The Journey Church. She was a woman of great faith, and her trust in God never wavered even under the most difficult circumstances. She was kind and generous and lived her life as a true example of what it means to be a follower of Christ.

She was granted the gift of long life and not one minute of it was wasted. Every day she woke up ready to hit the ground running. She was fiercely independent and feisty in a good way.  She was thankful for her sound mind and was optimistic about an upcoming procedure to replace her aortic valve.

Nell was devoted to her family and loved her home. Christmas decorating was one of her favorite activities. She enjoyed gardening and sewing, and she appliqued many beautiful quilts.  She was an excellent cook and baker, and her hot yeast rolls were legendary.  God granted her prayer to live out her life in her home.

The family wishes to thank the friends and neighbors who have gone out of their way to help Nell during her final years, especially Marilyn Jones, Debbie Strange, Kara Wynn, Edward and Patty Pineda, Becky Harris, Rick Royer, Pastor Bill and Cindy Richardson, Claire Paullus and Eric Favre. We also wish to thank Dr. Antwan Mardini, her longtime physician, for his kindness and concern.

Visitation is scheduled at 1:00 pm followed by the funeral at 2:00 pm on Thursday, September 1, 2022 in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25 ^th Street with Pastor Bill Richardson officiating. Burial at Roselawn Memorial Park will be at 11:00 am Friday, September 2.
