Nancy Jo Barrett, 79, of Terre Haute and formerly of Rockville, passed away at 3:15 p.m., Tuesday, April 11, 2017, at Providence Health Center at St. Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana. Born December 13, 1937, she was the daughter of Edgar and Vena (Watson) Moore. On January 18, 1964, she married John "Jay" Barrett III, in Evansville. He preceded her in death August 14, 1996. Together they raised eight children.
Nancy had been employed at the Rockville Correctional Facility until her retirement. She was the president of the Jay Barrett Athletic Foundation and president and number one cheerleader of the Barrett Grandchildren Fan Club.
As head football coach, Jay's job took him to Indianapolis, Terre Haute and Rockville. As a coach's wife Nancy was well known, respected and liked by the literally hundreds of students, family, friends and co-workers she came in contact with daily. Nancy had a true interest in everyone she met. A short trip to the mall could take hours, depending on who she met there that she might visit with.
An excellent cook, Nancy fed one and all when the opportunity arose. She fed many athletes, family friends, and relatives at holiday time, often when student-athletes could not be at home with their own loved ones. A Sunday meal at Barrett's was an event to be treasured.
Nancy is survived by four sons: John IV (Paula) Barrett, Christopher (Tracey) Barrett, Kevin (Michele) Barrett and Gregory (Molly) Barrett; four daughters: Jaymie (Brent) Wood, Christy (John) Sherman, Jennifer Russell, and Kathleen (Sean) Usher; twenty-one grandchildren: Jade (Eric)Larson, Logan Burdick, Christopher II, Kane, Nathan, Caitlin, Michael and Charlotte Barrett, John "Jack" Sherman III, Koby Kraemer (Seyma Erenli), Ethan, Nicholas, Alexandra Barrett, Margaret (Maggie) and Maureen Barrett, Mackenzie and Teagan Russell, and Meikala, Amya, Quinn and Saige Usher; and two great-grandchildren, Klayton and Mason Larson..
She was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband of 32 years, a brother, Jerry Moore and one grandson, Patrick Barrett.
