Mildred Lucille Herndon King, 102, of Terre Haute, went to her heavenly reward May 30, 2024. She was born to William Jennings Bryan Herndon and Eva Marie Jamison Herndon on April 4, 1922 in Bicknell, IN
She and her three sisters, Mary Louise, Betty Jean and Jerry Ann Herndon, brother, Bill and parents moved to Terre Haute where she attended Lang, McClain, Garfield, and Indiana State Teachers College.
She sang at school and church and then in high school she was asked to join the Billy Reece Band. She sang with them until she tried out for the Wayne McIntyre Band. She had a day job at the Terre Haute House and sang evenings.
That’s how she met then married Earl F. King on January 7, 1945. They had Linda King Smith widow of Richard, Tom King (Betty), Sharon King Grelecki (Chuck) and Jim King (Dottie).
She had six grandkids, fourteen great grandkids, and four great great grandkids.
She was a “stay at home mom” until her kids were in junior high and high school. She then worked at Plato’s Book Store until retirement.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Bryan and Eva Herndon; her husband, Earl F. King; and her daughter, Sharon King Grelecki.
Mildred was a member of Union Christian Church, Badoura Temple #23 Daughters of the Nile, and Zorah Honored Ladies. The family wishes to thank The Commons and Hospice for their great care of Mildred.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, June 5, 2024 in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street, with Mark Grayless officiating. Visitation will be prior to services from 11:00 A.M. until 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday. Entombment will be in Roselawn Chapel of Memories. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children.
