Max G. Miller, 80, of Terre Haute went to his eternal home surrounded by his daughters Monday evening, June 11, 2018. Max was born September 2, 1937 in Muncie, IN to Gerald and Dorothy Miller. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 55 years, Donna C. Uitts Miller in 2014. Survivors include his three daughters and sons-in-law Carmen & Brian Manning of Terre Haute, Brenda & David Pomfret of Hudson, WI, and Karen & Scott Foster of Avon, IN; seven grandchildren, Paul (Hannah), Thomas (Mallory) and Caitlin Manning, Roland Pomfret, Aislinn (Brandon) Ophoff, and Max and Claire Foster; one great-granddaughter, Elliott Manning; two brothers, Rodney Miller and his wife, Janice, of Kansas City, KS and William Miller and his wife, Roxie, of Atlanta, GA; and several nieces and nephews.

Max was a veteran of the United States Army. He was a proud Purdue University Boilermaker, earning his bachelor's degree in Agriculture in 1959 and master's degree in Agriculture Extension and Community Development in 1963. Max was a lifelong advocate for agricultural service and education, serving as a Purdue Extension agent for 36 years in Vigo, Huntington, Laporte, and Hamilton Counties. For the last five decades, Max was deeply committed to the advancement of Vigo County. A practical and dedicated visionary, he was passionate about bringing together the agricultural, business, and labor interests of the community for the mutual benefit of all Vigo County citizens. Max consistently set ambitious goals and pursued them with creativity and excellence.

Some of his achievements include establishing the Terre Haute Tomorrow Committee and developing a Master Plan for the community; chairing the Action Team for Community Appearance and Natural Environment; and helping initiate the city's trail system, Trees, Inc., Keep Terre Haute Beautiful, Neighborhood Association, Vigo County Park System, Pioneer Days, and the Wabash River Initiative. Max organized the Wabash River Development Committee and chaired its Wetlands Committee that established a 7,000-acre wetlands. He was also the founder of Leadership Terre Haute.

Max received numerous awards for his outstanding service and community leadership. He was awarded The Sagamore of the Wabash in 1996; the Purdue Agriculture Alumni Certificate of Distinction; the International Service Award for multiple trips to Poland and Slovakia; Leadership Terre Haute's Alan Rankin Service Award; Optimist International's Book of Golden Deeds Award; Trees Inc.'s Mighty Oak Award; the Terre Award; the Kiwanis Handclasp Award; the Sisters of Providence Trails Award; and the Paul Harris Rotary Community Award, among many others.

Max was a long-time member of the Purdue Agricultural Alumni Association and Kiwanis Club of Terre Haute. He was recently named a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and served on committees and boards for several organizations previously mentioned, as well as the Hamilton Center Hospital Board; Wabash Valley Fair Board; Vigo County Park Board; Terre Haute Children's Museum Board; Vigo County School Corporation committees; and Washington D.C. Chamber of Commerce Legislative Committee.

Max was active at Memorial United Methodist Church for nearly 50 years, where he participated in weekly Bible study and served on several committees. He enjoyed spending time with his friends and family, and he especially cherished his grandchildren. Max faithfully stewarded his wisdom, skills, and resources his entire life, demonstrating both tenderness and determination until his passing.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, June 16, 2018 in Memorial United Methodist Church, 2701 Poplar Street, with Reverend Scott Johnson and Reverend Chiyona Bourne officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park with Military Graveside Honors provided by VFW Post #972. Visitation is scheduled for Friday, June 15 from 4:00-7:00 PM and also on Saturday prior to services from 11:00 A.M.-1:00 P.M., all at Memorial United Methodist Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street.
