Mary Steele Richardson, 91, of Terre Haute passed away Saturday, March 15, 2013 in Southwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born December 27, 1922 in Neodesha, KS to Oscar and Mary Dods Steele. In 1944 she graduated from the University of Kansas in Lawrence and married Glen A. Richardson. They moved to Ames, IA in 1947 and to Worcester, MA in 1957. In 1974 they came to Terre Haute where Glen joined the faculty of Rose-Hulman. Mary was a member of Pi Lambda Theta and Pi Mu Epsilon and a patroness of Sigma Alpha Iota. She was a driver for the Good Cheer Club for the Blind. A volunteer brailist, Mary was certified by the Library of Congress to transcribe mathematics and science text books into braille. She was a violinist in the Terre Haute Symphony and dearly loved to play chamber music. She sang in the St. Stephen's Episcopal Church choir. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte Richardson and Paul Young of Hudson, MA; a son Edwin Richardson of Overland Park, Kansas; two nieces, Mary Tibiatowski and Cynthia Murray; and grand niece and nephew, Cynda and Cleis McLaughlin. She was preceded in death by her husband, a brother and sister-in-law, Edwin and Louella Steele, and a sister and brother-in-law, Lucinda and Istvan Gladics. Graveside service will be held at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, March 20, 2014 in Highland Lawn Cemetery with Reverend Mary Slenski officiating. There is no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th Street. The family suggests that any who wish to may contribute to the Terre Haute Symphony or the the music ministry of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in her memory.
