Mary Katherine Matherly Nobel, 96, passed away Saturday July 8, 2017. She was born March 13, 1921 to Lyman and Eva Belle Malone (nee Hamilton) Matherly of Terre Haute, Indiana. After losing her mother at age 10, Mary lived and was a student at Chauncey Rose School (formerly "Rose Orphan's Home," renamed in 1924), with her brother Lyman, Jr. and sister Betty.
During World War II, Mary was employed at Camp White Army Camp in Medford, Ore. with the 666th topo photography corps. In 1943, Mary returned home in time for the delivery of her only child, Katherine Marie Nobel, the love of her life.
Mary was employed in Terre Haute at Quaker Maid from 1950-1956, before relocating to Chicago. There, she worked at Arrow Photocopy Co, then many years as a claim examiner with Allstate Insurance.
She studied art through LaSalle Extension University until receiving extensive injuries in an auto accident. Mary returned to Terre Haute in 1975 and was employed at Distributer's Terminal and other jobs, returning to northern Illinois to retire near her daughter and grandchildren.
In 2000, she came home to Terre Haute, moving into Maryvale where she would remain until 2016, when she moved to Wyndmoor assisted living facility at age 95. Mary spent the better part of six years during that time at the nursing home bedside of her gravely ill daughter. She became a well-known image of compassion and kindheartedness among both patients and medical staff.
Above all, Mary was proud to be a mother and grandmother, was fiercely independent, strong and self-sufficient decades ahead of her time, and loved her country. In 2016, after decades of volunteer efforts for the USO in support of the military, a flag was raised on March 13, 2016, to honor Mary on her 95th birthday. At the Marine Corps Exchange 29 Palms, Twenty Nine Palms, California. Her flag ceremony was performed just before the one honoring former first lady Nancy Reagan. Mary's flag was later sent to her.
Mary is survived by her grandchildren Keith McClenning, Tammy McClenning, adopted granddaughter Jamie McDaniel, son-in-law Larry Henkle, sister-in-law Lyndall Matherly, and several cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband James Nobel, her beloved daughter in January 2013, and all five of her brothers and sisters-- Lyman Matherly, Bud Malone, Betty Lou Matherly Euartte, Evelyn Malone Turner, and Valara Malone Perrill.
Graveside services will be conducted 1:00 P.M. Sunday July 16, 2017 in Grandview Cemetery, 1601 Lockport Road. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th Street. Mary excuses her many friends, especially her wonderful senior friends at Maryvale whom she thanks for their many kindnesses.
