Mary Caroline White Gwin, 98, of Terre Haute passed away Monday in Springhill Village and Rehabilitation Center. Mary was born in Terre Haute on February 5, 1919 to William Leroy White and Amanda Loose White. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 46 years, William L. Gwin.
Mary is survived by her two children, Brenda Strange of Loogootee, IN and Bradley Gwin and his wife Della of Terre Haute; a brother, John R. White of Rockville; six grandchildren, Stephen Gwin and his wife Loretta, Christine Hildenbrand and her husband Edward, Sara Ramsey and her husband Chris, Paula Montgomery and her husband Rod, Suzanne Marts and her husband John and Marsha Marx and her husband Philip; eleven great-grandchildren, Cody & Noah Gwin, Brittany Woody, Whitney and Matthew Ramsey, Ella and Claire Montgomery, Cole & Gavin Marts, and Augustus and Deidrich Marx. Mary was also preceded in death by her parents; a son-in-law, Jeff Strange; a grandson, James Strange; and three great grandchildren, William Montgomery, and twins Blake and Emma Montgomery.
Mary graduated from Wiley High School, entered Indiana State Teacher's College and received her Master's Degree in Elementary Education. She obtained a principal's license. She taught at Fuqua Elementary for many years. She retired from the Vigo County School Corporation in 1979. Mary was a member of St. Mark's United Church of Christ, Terre Haute Women's Dept. Club, Badoura Temple #23 Daughters of The Nile Honored Ladies. Pimento Chapter #516 Order of the Eastern Star Birthday Club, Indiana State Teachers Association and Ladies Auxiliary #4254 of Naples, FL.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 1:00 PM Friday May 19, 2017 in Callahan & Hughes Funeral, 605 S. 25th Street with Pastor Mark Schimmel officiating. Entombment will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is two hours prior to services in the funeral home.
