Mary Ann Craig, 92, passed away at 8:30 a.m. on June 22, 2018 in Phoenix, AZ. She was comforted by her sons Mark and Bradley and a friend Magdaleno Marin in her last days. She spent 26 years working for Union Hospital in Terre Haute, IN, in charge of the Chaplaincy program and eventually became the Patient Representative of the hospital. She retired from Union Hospital in 1997. During those years of service, she was remembered by scores of patients and other families who came to her later and expressed their appreciation for reaching out to them during times of anxiety and uncertainty regarding their impending prognosis.
She was born at home on March 2, 1926, in Oakland City, IN, to Arthur and Opal Comer Henager. She was a graduate of Otwell High School and attended Indiana University. She is survived by her sons Mark of Indianapolis, IN and Bradley of Phoenix, AZ. Mary Ann was preceded in death by her husband John T. (Tom) Craig, who died in August 2016. They married during WWII at Ft. Benning, GA, on December 19, 1943. Her brothers Joe and John Alexander also preceded her in death. Mary Ann is survived by Joe's wife Sondra and three step-grandchildren, Kevin and Becca Kopke of Ft. Wayne, IN, and the children Ashley, Alexia, Aayla and Kylee. She is also survived by Sam and Laurie Kopke Mounsamrouath and their son little Sam of Ft. Wayne, IN, and Kristie and Rob Crisp and children Breanna, Justin, and Jalen of Ft. Wayne, IN, as well as sister-in-law Diane Alexander of Monticello, IL and several loving nieces and nephews. Mary Ann is also survived by former daughter-in-law Mary Helmutz of Wolcotville, IN.
Mary Ann and Tom were charter members of the Eastside Church of Christ. Mary Ann spent many years in the church teaching children's Sunday school and later Ladies' Bible classes. She constantly stood by her husband who served as a deacon and elder for 44 years.
In addition to her 26 years with Union Hospital, Mary Ann served as President of the Wabash Valley Chapter of Mended Hearts, Inc.; past President of Newcomers Club; past President of the Indiana Society of Patient Representatives; member of Women's Department Club, and the Union Hospital Service League. She received the Girl's Club Woman of the Year Award; the Kiwanis Handclasp Award; the Otwell High School Award for Humanitarian Service, and the Otwell High School alumna "Woman of the Year" Award. Perhaps one of the most appreciated highlights of her career was the Bauer Award, presented to her by Union Hospital in 1994 in recognition of her service as Patient Representative. She and Tom received the Crystal Heart Award for their work with Mended Hearts. In October 2010, 13 years after her retirement, the Chaplain's Office of Union Hospital honored her by establishing a funded "Mary Ann Craig Chaplain of the Year" Award to be presented each year to the outstanding volunteer chaplain. The recipient would receive an engraved crystal bowl and his/her name would be added to a plaque in the Chaplain's office each year.
Mary Ann was known throughout Wabash Valley for one of her favorite hobbies - giving book reviews for various organizations in the Valley, as well as doing special programs for many church groups during Thanksgiving, Christmas and other holidays and special occasions.
Mary Ann was a loving and devoted wife, a model stay-at-home mother, while her family was still in the nest, and a servant Christian to all who knew her. She was about the only non-working mother on the block and was host to many neighborhood kids in her back yard after school in her sons' tree house, trenched yard, beehives, and rabbit hutches. She was a person whose daily life was recognized by her husband, sons, church members and almost all who knew her as one who quietly displayed all of the elements of the fruit of the Holy Spirit; such as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Tom told many that she possessed more of all of these attributes, daily, than anyone he had ever known.
Mary Ann and Tom moved to Phoenix, AZ, in 2014 to live out their last days in Bradley's care.
