Mary Ann Carroll, 89, of Terre Haute died Thursday evening, September 6, 2018. She was born January 29, 1929, in Terre Haute to Margaret Mountz Carroll and George Charles Carroll. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Elizabeth Carroll Shearer.
She spent 54 years as a teacher/administrator in Terre Haute. She earned her bachelor's and master's degrees from Indiana State University and her doctoral degree from Indiana University. She taught mathematics at Sarah Scott Junior High School from 1950 to 1962, the last 7 years also serving as Dean of Girls. She taught mathematics and was Dean of Girls at Wiley High School for the academic year 1963-64. She joined Indiana State University in l964 as Assistant Dean of the School of Graduate Studies and in 1976 became Dean of the School of Graduate Studies. She continued in that position until January 1, 1996, when she became Assistant to the President and Director of Governmental Affairs at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. While at Indiana State University, she was instrumental in bringing approximately 15 million dollars of federal funds to the University. While at Rose-Hulman, she was instrumental in bringing 7 million dollars of federal funds to the Institute and 4 million dollars for Crane/Rose-Hulman projects. She retired on December 31, 2004.
Her professional activities included service on the Board and Executive Committee of the Council of Graduate Schools of the United States; membership on the Board and Executive Committee of the Graduate Records Examinations; President of the Indiana Association of Graduate Schools; and President of the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools.
Her accreditation experiences included serving on the Board and as President of the North Central Association of Schools and Colleges, which accredits colleges and universities in a 17 state region. She served as chair or a team member on over 30 college accreditation visits including trips to branch campuses in Moscow, Zimbabwe, Kenya, and London. She was chair of the NCA Centennial Planning Committee. She also served in an accrediting capacity for the National League of Nursing and the National Association of Industrial Technology.
Mary Ann was a Chi Omega, having been a charter member of Alpha Delta Chapter at Indiana State University. She served as National Vice President for 9 years and received the Chi Omega Fraternity Woman of Achievement Award in 1994.
Indiana State University recognized her with a Distinguished Alumni Award in 1996.
Her community activities included serving on the Board and President of the Wabash Valley Community Foundation; serving on the Board and President of the Board of Overseers, a member of the Board of Managers and Treasurer of the Swope Art Museum; serving on the Board of the Union Hospital Foundation and Chair of its Grants and Awards Committee. She served for 27 years on Senator Richard Lugar's Air Force Academy Selection Committee.
She was a member of P.E.O. Chapter K, Centenary United Methodist Church, DAR, Colonial Dames, the Terre Haute Country Club, and Tobies.
She loved her family, her friends, her former students, her Cairn terrier, and life in general.
Funeral services for Dr. Mary Ann Carroll will take place at 10:00 AM, Saturday, September 15, 2018 in Centenary United Methodist Church, 301 North 7th Street, with Reverend Mel Camp officiating and personal remarks provided by a few close friends. There is no visitation. Burial will be with her parents and sister in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Pleasant Lake, IN. Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street.
