Mary Evelyn Allen Box passed away June 11, 2024 at Westminster Village North in Indianapolis, Indiana. She was born October 27, 1929 in Daviess County, Indiana to Joseph Ray Allen and Mary Emeline Harp who predeceased her.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law; Michael and Stephanie (Edmund) Box of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin and David and Kristina (McKee) Box of Indianapolis, Indiana. She is also survived by six grandchildren; Andrea (Yale) Dieckmann of Wilmette, Illinois and Ashlee Box of Charlotte, North Carolina; Kathryn (Amber) Box and Lauren (Brandon) Box of Indianapolis, Indiana; Joseph (Brian) Box-Jarman of Greenfield, Indiana and Jonathan (Deborah) Box of Dallas, Texas. In addition, she is survived by six great-grandchildren: Landon, Whit, and Audrey Dieckmann; Liam Box, Charlotte Marenna, and Juliet Jarman.
Mrs. Box was married to Ralph F. Box on June 12, 1948 who predeceased her March 31, 1992. She was also predeceased by her sister, Eva Lee Smithers and two brothers, Norman D. Allen and Joseph Ray Allen, Jr.
Mrs. Box graduated from Oolitic High School with the class of 1947; attended Indiana University, and obtained her bachelors and masters degrees from Indiana State University. She was an instructor at St. Margaret Mary Elementary School, Schulte High School, and the University School in Terre Haute, Indiana. She was a member of the DAR, DAC, Indiana Historical Society, and the Vigo and Lawrence County Historical Societies. She was active in Centenary United Methodist Church and First Baptist Church in Terre Haute.
Services will be held at Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th Street, Terre Haute, Indiana on Saturday, June 15, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Steve Newman presiding. Burial will be in Highland Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Saturday. Those who wish may make memorial gifts to the Ralph F. Box and Family Insurance Scholarship at Indiana State University, Riley Children’s Hospital, or the charity of their choice.
