Mary Alice Shannon Klueh passed to her reward on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017 in her residence at Cannon Inn in Terre Haute. Mary Alice was born on May 23, 1926, to Frank Patrick Shannon (Director of Advertising for the Terre Haute Tribune and the Terre Haute Star) and Mary Hagan Shannon. Her mother Mary Shannon died shortly after the birth of Mary Alice, and Frank Shannon's sister Cecilia raised her.
Mary Alice was a graduate of Indiana State Laboratory High School and of Saint Mary of the Woods College, 1948. She was a life-long member of Sigma Alpha Iota Music Society and took part in many of its concerts and activities. She was a member of the Terre Haute Symphony Board and took leading roles in two light operas, The Student Prince and The Vagabond King (1950). She also sang on a local radio station in the 1950s.
She was married to Duane Klueh of Terre Haute, and together they raised seven children. A long-time parishioner of St. Benedict's Church, she was a cantor with the church choir, a member of the Altar Society, and a quilter for the St. Benedict's Annual Festival. She was also active with the St. Benedict's soup kitchen.
Mary Alice took great interest in local and regional history and worked as a docent at the Terre Haute Historical Society. She also worked as a tour guide at the Paul Dresser Home.
Mary Alice is survived by her husband of 68 years, Duane Klueh, and her children, Larry Klueh (Anne) of Minnesota, Katherine Risacher of Florida, Mary Klueh (David Marquis) of Minnesota, John Klueh (Tameria Ford) of Indiana, Michael Klueh (Susan Torrence) of Indiana, James Klueh (Rhonda Nelson) of Utah, and Paul Klueh of Missouri. She is also survived by grandchildren Joseph and Cecilia, Shannon, Michael and Julia, Morgen and Christopher, and Gabriel, Charles and Martha. Mary Alice is survived also by great-grandchildren Holden, Rowan and Josie, Eli and Isaac, and Stellan.
Mary Alice was preceded in death by her father Frank Shannon, her mother Mary, and by her two sisters, Eleanor Jean and Anna Marie, who both died at birth.
Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 12:05 P.M., Tuesday, February 21, 2017 in St. Benedict Church, 111 South 9th Street, with Father Martin Day, OFM Conv. officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled prior to services on Tuesday from 10:00 AM - 12:00 Noon in the church.
