Marjorie A. Newlin, 92, of Terre Haute passed away Friday morning, July 11, 2014 in Union Hospital. She was born July 28, 1921 in Terre Haute to Minor H. McCandless and Mae Utz McCandless. Survivors include her loving husband of 71 years, John T. Newlin; three children, John S. Newlin and his wife, Kristina, of Terre Haute, Thomas C. Newlin and his wife, Laurice, of Terre Haute and Sally Newlin of Terre Haute; a sister, Mary Martha Lahart of Merrillville, IN; five grandchildren, John K. Newlin and his wife, Carolyn, Kathryn Newlin Smith and her husband, Jeff, T. C. Newlin and his wife, Taleen, Christopher Newlin and Brian Newlin; four great-grandchildren, Ella Smith, Stewart Smith, Veronica Newlin and Thomas C. Newlin III; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Lois Olson. Marjorie was a graduate of St. Patrick School (1935), Wiley High School (1939) and Indiana State University (1943) where she received her bachelor's degree in Home Economics. She was a member of the Country Club of Terre Haute, a lifetime member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and was a dedicated long-time member of Sigma Kappa Social Sorority at I.S.U. Marjorie served as president of Sigma Kappa Corporation Board of Directors and was instrumental in the construction of the sorority house located at 7th and Elm streets in Terre Haute. Recently she was honored by Sigma Kappa for her lifetime contributions and achievements to the sorority. Prayers will begin at 9:30 A.M. Tuesday, July 15, 2014 at Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 1807 Poplar Street, with Father Rick Ginther officiating. Burial will be in Highland Lawn Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Monday, July 14th from 4:00-8:00 P.M. in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home. The family kindly requests that memorial contributions may be made to Catholic Charities of Terre Haute, 1801 Poplar Street, Terre Haute, IN 47803.
