Marilyn Louise (Smudde) Klug

Marilyn Louise (Smudde) Klug, 92, of Terre Haute, passed away Monday, March 14, 2022, at Regional Hospital. She was born December 3, 1929, in Racine, Wisconsin to Theodore and Elizabeth (Doliana) Smudde.

Marilyn, a retired teacher from the Vigo County School Corporation taught at Dixie Bee Elementary 1 st Grade, and DeVaney Elementary as a reading teacher for Title 1,  a program to help children with reading and math. After retirement she became a consultant for non-public schools for five years, and then supervised student teachers at St. Mary-of-the-Woods for nine years. She loved teaching for 25 years. Marilyn also loved reading and chaired a Retired Teachers book discussion group. She belonged to Newcomers, loved her flowers and was active in the Garden group, and learned to quilt in the Quilting group. Marilyn made several baby and king size quilts.  She moved into Westminster Village in December of 2019 where she enjoyed playing dominoes and card games, such as Hand and Foot and Euchre.

Marilyn chaired many interest groups.  She was the past President of Delta Kappa Gamma, a teacher’s sorority, and the past president of the Wabash Valley Reading Association. Marilyn was the Queen Mum of her Red Hat group of 25 women, she helped plan luncheons and activities for many years. She was on the Board of the Educational Heritage Association and served as secretary and volunteered at their museum, helping to catalog memorabilia from the Vigo County School Corporation. These items were donated by former students, parents and teachers who attended or taught in Vigo County.

Marilyn was a member of St. Margaret Mary's Catholic Church for 60 years serving as a greeter and volunteering in many other church activities. Marilyn helped make noodles to sell, priced and arranged articles for the garage sale every Labor Day, made casseroles for funeral luncheons, items for the craft sale every November, and was a member of the church School Board in the past. She also was a 35-year member of the German Oberlander Club.

Marilyn (Grammy) loved her grandchildren and treated them to a fun day every summer called "Grammy Day". Each one chose what they wanted to do and then made a book with pictures showing their Grammy Day activities.

Survivors include one brother, Glenn Smudde and his wife Mary from LaPorte, IN, five children: James Klug of Terre Haute, Mary Bauer (Dave) of Colorado, Dan Klug (Janna) of Terre Haute, Richard Klug of Terre Haute, Janet Rowe (Mike) of Terre Haute; 13 grandchildren, Josh Bauer (Jenna), Brittney Sherman Bauer (Jordan), Jared Klug, Christa Bauer (Colin), Jordan Klug, Janel Klug Kline (Mike), Evan Bauer, Bradley Rowe (Annette), Alexis Klug, Justin Rowe, Zachary Klug, Lauren Rowe, Sarah Rowe; five great-grandchildren: Paxton Bauer, Vaughn Bauer, Grace Kline, Weston Sherman, Skylah Spencer.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 1/2 years, John Vincent Klug, three brothers, Donald Smudde, Dr. Roy A. Smudde, Dr. Carl A. Smudde, as well as her parents Theodore and Elizabeth Smudde.

A visitation is scheduled from 4:00-7:00 PM, Sunday, March 20, 2022 with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 PM in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street.  Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 9:00 AM, Monday, March 21 st at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 2405 South 7 th Street, with Father Ben Syberg officiating.  Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions may be made to St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 2405 South 7 th Street, Terre Haute, IN 47802.
