Mariam (Helen) Metz Humphrey, 88, of Terre Haute passed away 9/18/2016 at Westminster Health & Rehabilitation with her family at her side following a stroke and extended illness. She was born October 6, 1927 in Boonville, Indiana to Harold Metz and Mabel Trisler Metz. Helen graduated from Boonville High School in 1945 and attended Lindenwood College located in St. Charles Missouri where she played on the varsity tennis team. Helen transferred to Indiana University and graduated in 1949 with a B.S. in Business Education. She taught school near Lafayette Indiana prior to her marriage in 1950.
One weekend Helen came home from Indiana University to visit her parents and met her future husband James E. Humphrey, a lifelong resident of Terre Haute. Jim was visiting his sister Mayme Humphrey Watkins, a neighbor of the Metz family, and offered to give Helen a ride back to Indiana University. This started their romance which led to marriage June 11, 1950. After Jim graduated from Indiana University School of Dentistry, Helen and Jim moved to Terre Haute and started their family.
During Helen's illness she was not able to speak well but there was one thing that she was able to communicate and that was her love for her family: This was the most important part of her life and sustained her throughout her illness.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Jim Humphrey in 1991. She is survived by her four children and their spouses. Dr. Patricia Humphrey Clark, and her husband Rick of Terre Haute, Ann Woods, and her husband Bob of Westville Indiana, Kay Stebbins, and her husband Jim of Zionsville Indiana, and Dr. Jim Humphrey , and his wife Heather of Terre Haute Indiana; and a sister Martha Ary of Ridge Park, VA. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, Dr. Jason Clark and his wife Natalie, Matthew Clark and his wife Grace, Dr. Michael Woods and his wife Morgan, Brett Woods and his wife Michelle, Scott Woods, Andy Stebbins, Jennifer Stebbins, Lauren Stebbins, Megan Stebbins, Brooke Humphrey, Garret Humphrey, Hannah Humphrey and Elizabeth Humphrey: 5 great-grandchildren, James Clark, Isabella Woods, Emma Woods, Landon Woods & Harper Woods; and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her loved and constant companion, her dog Sammy
Helen was a member of AO (Alpha Omicron Pi) sorority at Indiana University. Helen had a wide variety of interests in her life; she was a talented pianist and an enthusiastic reader. She was an avid and dedicated bridge player who started playing bridge with her sorority sisters and continued to play until just before her illness. She played tennis throughout her life and maintained a love of the sport. She was a terrific bowler and bowled in many leagues until she was 80 years old. In addition she played golf in many leagues. Helen was an avid walker and would walk up to five miles a day for many years.
Helen was a long standing member of Maple Avenue United Methodist Church. She was active in many organizations including Tri Kappa, Chapter K, P.E.O., Dental Auxiliary, League of Terre Haute, T.O.B.I.E.S., Daughters of the American Revolution and Women's Department Club. In addition she volunteered her time to the American Cancer Society on Daffodil Day and served as a docent at Swope Art Gallery. Helen had a lifelong love of the Chicago Cubs and I.U. basketball and she rarely missed watching a game on television.
Later in life, Helen worked as a realtor for Larry Hellman Coldwell Banker. She always loved antiques and attending auctions. She became an antiques dealer and maintained booths in Zionsville and Rockville for many years.
The family wishes to thank Diane Trefry for her help and kindness. Diane was Helen's care giver and treated Helen as she would treat her own mother. We could not have gone through this without her. We also wish to thank the staff, nurses, and CNAs at Westminster Health and Rehabilitation and the VNA Hospice for their compassionate care and kindness. Special thanks to Dr. Koshy Oommen and Dr. Venkat Reddy.
The family deeply appreciates the spiritual guidance and counsel of the Rev. David Rockhill and the prayers from the congregation of the Maple Avenue United Methodist Church congregation.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, September 22, 2016 at Maple Avenue United Methodist Church, 1203 Maple Avenue, Terre Haute with Reverend David Rockhill officiating. Private entombment will be at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 21st from 5:00 - 7:00 P.M. at Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street.
