Margaret Helen "Peg" Fischer
March 30, 1931 — July 16, 2020
A graduate of Collett Park School and Garfield High School, she attended Indiana State Teacher's College (now Indiana State University) for three years before marrying the love of her life, fellow student James Benedict Fischer. She joined Kappa Kappa local sorority, now Alpha Omicron Pi. After raising their six children, she entered the Women's External Degree (WED) Program at St.-Marys-of-the-Woods College, earning a social work degree in 1988.
At the premature death of her husband in 1989, Peg ran the family's Amoco service station at 3rd and Margaret, transitioning it from auto repair to convenience store. At one period this was the top pumping station in Indiana at the crossroads of Interstate 70 and U. S. 41.
Peg was president of Mothers' Club at St. Patrick's Catholic School, establishing a textbook rental program, and president of the Mothers' Club at Schulte High School. Her apple crumb pies were famous, doled out for quarterback sacks at Butler and other occasions. Nickname was "Piecrust" in her email, but many of the children called her "Neenaw."
She developed sports allegiances to all her children's universities: Indiana State, Purdue and Butler. She loved the Colts and was a devoted fan-in-the-stands at her grandchildren and great grandchildren's sports. She was an organizer of what is now the Big Blue Booster Club at ISU.
Later in life she was a member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church, serving on the Finance Committee 25 years and volunteering in the soup kitchen. She was recognized with the 2007 St. Benedict Church Lifetime Achievement Award and helped spearhead the renovation of the Pieta Room as part of an over $2 million capital campaign.
Peg volunteered in leadership with St. Anthony's Hospital Guild, Meals on Wheels, Deanery Board of Education, and Rose Ladies Aid Society. Her memberships included Tri Kappa, Strawberry Hill Cannoneers spouse and Elks Club. She was a passionate and expert left-handed player on corn hole teams at Westminster in Terre Haute and Marquette. Other favorite pastimes were bridge, crosswords, Yahtzee, Scrabble and Words with Friends. Even with her grandchildren, she played to win.
She enjoyed fishing, especially at Rainy Lake, Ontario, north of International Falls. She liked nothing better than to stay most of the summer at the cabin, gathering various families on consecutive weeks and one memorable time with an uninvited bear. Peg was a world traveler to Alaska, Australia, England, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Russia, Scotland and Switzerland. A trip with friends to "the boat" for the quarter slot machines was great recreation, as were regular luncheons with cousin Mary Louise "Weezie" Smith.
She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings: Rosemary Smith, Ralph Killion, Nora Belle Watt and William Killion and by great granddaughter Caitlin Coffman.
She is survived by children Anne Marie Bedford (Steven), Williamston, MI; Thomas J. Fischer (Maribeth), Indianapolis; Randal J. Fischer (Cathy), Brownsburg; Mary Elizabeth "Beth" Callahan (Jerry), Orange Beach, AL; David B. Fischer (Kate), Dublin, OH, and Ellen L. Rastovski (Tim), Valparaiso, IN.
Seventeen grandchildren with spouses first, followed by the 14 great grandchildren within family groups: Brian Bedford, Daniel Bedford (Lindsay and Jayden, Evelyn, Isla, Edith); Andrew Fischer (Shawna and Marita, Richmond), Katie Fischer (Paul Haveck), Sally Strus (Michael and Margot), James P. Fischer (Kathleen); Matthew Fischer (Tricia and Rosemary), Ben Fischer (Regan and Everett), Stephen Fischer (Kristin), Laura Fischer; Becky Coffman (Chris and Brady, Ben, Beau), Andy Callahan (Jessica and child expected in August); Samantha "Sam" Jackson (Kevin), John Henry Fischer (Kate Gosser), James D. Fischer; Alex Rastovski, Annie Rastovski.
Due to Covid 19 circumstances, all arrangements are private, however, family and friends are invited to view a webcast remotely via Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home's website at www.callahanandhughes.com where there will be a "Featured Services " Section to click which will direct viewers to the services as follows: visitation is scheduled from 8:30-9:30 AM, Saturday, July 25, 2020, in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in St. Benedict Catholic Church, concluding with burial at Calvary Cemetery.
