Lucille D. Turner, Educator, Dies at 101

Lucille June Daugherty Turner passed away Friday, February 15, 2019 while visiting in West Palm Beach, Florida. Born August 2, 1917 in Greene County, Indiana to Vaughn and Pearl Bennett Daugherty, she was the oldest of seven children. She was graduated from Clinton High School and Indiana State University. Lucille was married for 67 years to her high school sweetheart, John F. "Jack" Turner who passed away in 2006.

Lucille taught in Vigo County Schools before being named Associate Professor of Education at Indiana State University where she taught in the Laboratory School. She assisted in the opening of the University's Learning Skills (Academic Enrichment) Center serving as Assistant Director. During her teaching career she developed innovative educational opportunities for gifted children including classroom instruction in remote locations. Lucille was active in the Indiana Council on Social Studies serving as President and was appointed by the Governor to the Indiana State Teachers Licensing and Certification Commission. She served on various Faculty Committees, and as Advisor to Campus Ministries and Alpha Phi Sorority.

Lucille has been a member of the Terre Haute First Baptist Church for nearly 70 years providing leadership to numerous Boards and Committees; Past President of Sigma Alpha Sorority; a member of West Terre Haute Chapter #428 Order of Eastern Star for 82 years; an active 63 year member of Badoura Temple #23 Daughters of the Nile, serving in various offices including Queen and receiving several Supreme appointments. She has been active in the Woman's Department Club serving as President and until recently on the Board of Directors. She is a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International, and a Sagamore of the Wabash.

Lucille was predeceased by her parents and husband; son, Mark D. Turner; brothers Vaughn and James Daugherty; sisters, Dorothy Lovell and Nelda Nelson and sisters-in-law, Barbara Daugherty and Rebecca Daugherty. She is survived by her daughter, Suzanne Turner of West Palm Beach, FL; brothers, Dr. Forest Daugherty (Marsha), Columbus, IN and William Daugherty, Anderson, IN; sister-in-law, Carole Daugherty, Terre Haute; daughter-in-law, Pamela Turner, Keller, TX; granddaughters, Dr. Megan D. Turner, Marissa (Ryan) Ehinger, and son Gregory, Keller, TX., and Michelle Williams and daughters Peyton and Camryn, Keller, TX; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

Calling hours will be from 6-8 p.m., Thursday evening, February 21, 2019 at Callahan and Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, 4701 Poplar Street. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park.
