Lorraine Barden

September 28, 1919 — June 26, 2017

LORRAINE BARDEN, devoted wife, mother and friend, passed at her home in Terre Haute, Indiana, on June 26, 2017, surrounded by her daughter, Cathy, son, David, and loving caregiver, Tracy Hoopingarner.

Lorraine lived her life, of 97 years, with unequalled strength, courage, purpose and grace. Her life accomplishments were significant in all respects. Her devotion and support to her husband and children was paramount, elating in their joy and successes.

Lorraine, as was her husband, was an avid reader and enjoyed discussion of philosophy, politics, poetry and life views and attitudes. Having received her Masters Degree in Education from Indiana State University, Lorraine taught fourth grade in the Vigo County School system for 33 years, specifically at the old Riley, Indiana school. She was an inspirational teacher, instilling in her students, as she did in her own children, values of fortitude and insight, so that all would go forward with a strong sense of self and achievement.

Lorraine was preceded in death by her devoted husband, George, her mother and father, Marie and Claude Davis and brother, Con. She is survived by her daughter, Cathy O'Keefe of Santa Fe, New Mexico, her son and daughter-in-law, David and Barbara Barden of Boca Raton, Florida and her granddaughter and grand-son-in-law, Jaime and Chris Medlicott and grandson, Michael Barden, all of Boca Raton, Florida.

Lorraine was born in Coalmont, Indiana on September 28, 1919. After graduation from ISU, Lorraine met her husband, George, in San Diego, California. They were married in Mystic, Connecticut, where they lived, close to George's family, later moving to Indiana.

Lorraine, as did George, enjoyed many visits to their daughter's homes in California and New Mexico and their son's in Boca Raton.

Lorraine's ardent purpose throughout her life was caring for her family in thought and deed and rejoicing in their journeys and achievements. Education, particularly of her children and grandchildren was a key focus, and in later life, pride also came from their granddaughter becoming a CPA and grandson a current medical school student.

Lorraine's selflessness and strength of character will shine foreverthe brightest of lights. Lorraine will be loved and missed beyond words. But gratitude for the peace she now knows fills her family's hearts and henceforth will.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to Lorraine's extraordinary caregivers, Tracy Hoopingarner, Danielle Hoopingarner, Debbie Caldwell, Mikki Gossar, Hannah Harden, Lauren Evans, and Chyenne Wilson as well as most special thanks to Dr. Koshy Oommen for his exceptional care, Hospice and VNA of the Wabash Valley and Heart to Heart Hospice.
