Lois Guthrie Becker, 87, of Terre Haute passed away Wednesday morning, December 30, 2015, at Cobblestone Crossings Health Campus. Lois was born March 17, 1928 in Pana, Illinois, to Hal Guthrie and Neta Tucker Guthrie.
Survivors include her loving husband of 50 years, J. Richard Dick Becker, Jr.; two children, John Richard Becker III of Terre Haute and Dr. Julia Marie Becker and her husband, Allen Hackney, Jr., of Lafayette, IN; a brother, Owen Guthrie and his wife, Coralie, of Springfield, IL; and a brother-in-law, Joe Becker and his wife, Betty, of Winston-Salem, NC.
Lois was valedictorian of the 1946 class of Cowden High School, Cowden, IL and graduated with honors from Eastern Illinois University in 1951. She continued her education and in 1955 became one of the first women to earn an MBA from Indiana University. Lois taught at Bethany High School in Bethany, IL, Ball State University and Indiana State University. She also worked with the Vigo County School Corporation and was a bookkeeper for United Campus Ministry for several years. Lois was honored as a member of Pi Omega Pi, Kappa Delta Pi and Delta Pi Epsilon. Additional memberships include Alpha Phi Sorority, Past president of Rose-Hulman Parents Association, ISU Wives Club, Memorial United Methodist Church, past treasurer of Friends of the Vigo County Public Library, and was a volunteer at the Vigo County Historical Museum.
Visitation is scheduled for Sunday, January 3, 2016 from 3:00 7:00 P.M. in Memorial United Methodist Church, 2701 Poplar Street. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Monday, January 4th in the church with an hour of visitation prior to services. Reverend D. Scott Johnson will be officiating. Burial is scheduled for Tuesday, January 5th at 12:00 Noon in New Salem Cemetery in Auglaize County, Ohio. Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street.
