Lloyd "Lou" Darrell Ater, 87, of Terre Haute passed away on Monday, March 25, 2013 in Union Hospital. He was born September 27, 1925 in Lovington, IL to Roy Ater and Eva Shipp Ater. Lou was a Certified Public Accountant. He started his career as controller for Neisler Labs in Decatur, IL and later was with Mallinkrodt Pharmaceuticals in St. Louis. His first position in Terre Haute was with the firm of Sackrider and Company. Lou was in private practice for the last 35 years and a large part of his practice was for Sunset Harbor. Survivors include his wife, Karen Arnett Ater; two sons, Gary Ater of Terre Haute and Alan Ater and his wife JoAnne of Madison, AL; a step-son, James DeLoach of Terre Haute; and three grandchildren, Paul Ater, Lauren Ater, and Hannah Ater. He was preceded in death by his father; his mother; and his step-mother Gertie Ater. Lou was a graduate of the University of Illinois, a member of the Pachyderm Club, and was active in the Republican Party. He was a past member of the Elks and the Country Club of Terre Haute. Lou was also a U.S. Navy Veteran. The family would like to thank everyone at Sunset Harbor, the nurses at Union Hospital, and Dr. Antwan Mardini for their friendship and care. Private memorial services will be held on Thursday, March 28, 2013 in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Terre Haute Humane Society, Children's Museum, or the charity of your choice.
