Leola May (Wilson) Jones, formerly of Terre Haute, died October 16, 2016 in Ojai, California at the age of 97. She was born in Larned, Kansas on May 7, 1919. A few years later her family, including an older brother Leonard and her twin brother Leo, moved to Terre Haute, Indiana. By her own admission, she grew up as a bit of a tomboy, living at the edge of town and wondering the woods and streams with her two brothers. When she was seventeen her parents decided to move to Missouri to operate a small farm, but she stayed behind, living with a favorite Aunt until she completed high school.
She married the love of her life, Leland Jones, on May 24, 1941. Soon after they were married Leland enlisted in the U. S. Army where he served as a Staff Sergeant with the Medical Battalion of the 13th Armored Battalion in Bavaria until discharged in February of 1946. Their only child, Darrell L. Jones, was born in January of 1947.
Leola became a seamstress while Leland was away, making custom clothing for friends and neighbors. Her talents with needle and thread soon led to work with a local Interior Decorator, Mildred Schmidt. Together, they designed and fabricated interior decorations for many of Terre Haute's fine homes. Upon Leland's return, he found employment as a housepainter and soon gained a reputation as a skilled and conscientious master craftsman. Ultimately, Leola and Leland Jones became a team that were in great demand for designing and creating interiors for many fine homes and businesses throughout Terre Haute and the surrounding area.
Along the way, Leland earned membership in the Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite's Temple and became a Shriner. Leola followed suit and was named Queen of Badoura Temple #23 Daughters of the Nile in 1971, where she presided over many gala festivities organized to raise funds for underprivileged girls in the Terre Haute area.
In 2003 she moved to Ojai, California to live near her son, Darrell and his wife Glenda. She was delighted when she found a small home with a mountain view surrounded by citrus trees and oak trees in the back lawn looking out onto a grassy horse pasture. Of course she had to remodel the home and repaint everything to "make it right."
Leola was a wonderful wife and mother. She knew how to give soft answers. She knew how to encourage youth and kept her promises. She found the time to make others happy. She knew how to gladden the heart of a child. She took pleasure in the beauty and wonders of the earth.
Leola was preceded in death by husband Leland who died in early 2000. She is survived by her son, Darrell Jones, her daughter-in-law Glenda Jones, and cousins Harold Jones of Indianapolis, Indiana, Lyle Jones of Austin, Texas, and Terry Pehan of Chrisfield, Maryland.
Her remains will be interred in Roselawn Memorial Park next to her husband Leland. A private memorial service will be held at a yet to be determined date. Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street. Funeral information may also be found at www.callahanandhughes.com.
