Kathryn Jo George

Kathryn Jo Reid (Tassa) George was born into her eternal home and reunited with her husband, Bill, and son, Tom, on June 14, 2016. Kathryn was born to Kathryn Kirkham Reid and James Thomas Reid in Tulsa, Oklahoma on January 10, 1928, where she lived until seventh grade. She attended middle school in Indianapolis and then the family moved home to Sullivan, Indiana. She graduated from Sullivan High School in 1945 and attended Ward Belmont College for Women the following fall. After attending Ward Belmont for one year, Kathryn moved to Muncie, Indiana to be near her Bill, who was attending Ball State Teachers College, where she worked in the Delaware County courthouse and for a furniture company. Kathryn and Bill were married on June 6, 1948 in Sullivan. When the newlyweds moved to Terre Haute in 1952, Kathryn took a secretarial position at Commercial Solvents in the patent office. When her son, Tom, came along in 1953, Kathryn left the workforce to be a full-time wife and mother. While raising her family, Kathryn was active in her church and community. As a member of Tri Kappa, she was assistant editor of the Cross Keys magazine during the time that Peg Elliott was editor. She was a member of the Jaycee Wives club and the Optimisses (auxiliary, at the time to the Noon Optimist club). Kathryn loved music and was a long-time season ticket holder to the Terre Haute Symphony and attended other performances of various kinds as often as she could. She loved to sing and was part of the Indiana State University Choral Union and the Terre Haute Symphony Chorus as well as church choirs in every church of which she was a member. Kathryn was a patroness member of Sigma Alpha Iota music fraternitys Terre Haute alumna chapter. Kathryn was a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, chapter AW, for over 50 years and served in many offices of the chapter during her membership, including president.
Kathryn is survived by her son, William George and his wife, Eileen, of Saint Louis, her daughter Kathy George of Terre Haute, her daughter-in-love, Kathy George of Indianapolis, her grandson Brandon George and his wife, Stephanie, of Philadelphia, her granddaughter, Anna George of Chicago, her granddaughter, Helen George, of Saint Louis, her sister Sue Ferrier, of Huntsville, Alabama, her niece, Nancy Shiver and her husband Terry of Lake City, Florida, her niece, Susan Sun and her husband, Tim, of Pasadena, California, and her nephew, David Ferrier, of Hayhira, Georgia.
Kathryn will be greatly missed by the many people who knew and loved her. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Terre Haute Symphony, the Terre Haute Symphony Chorus, the P.E.O. Sisterhood care of chapter AW, Central Presbyterian Church, or a charity of your choice.
Visitation will be on June 24th at Callahan Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S 25th St, Terre Haute, IN 47803 from 6:00 8:00 p.m. The funeral will be held on June 25th at Central Presbyterian Church, 125 N. 7th Street at 11:00 a.m. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the funeral service at Central Presbyterian Church. A brief graveside service will be held at Center Ridge Cemetery in Sullivan, Indiana prior to interment at 1:00 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan Hughes Funeral Home, Terre Haute, Indiana.
