Joseph H. Taylor, 97, of Terre Haute passed on to his heavenly home Sunday, January 14, 2018 at Westminster Health & Rehab. Joe was born July 19, 1920 in Paris, KY to Joseph and Emma N. Taylor. He was married to Macie Leora Taylor for 65 years before her death in November 2015.
Survivors include his grandson, Patric Taylor (Kristal) of Charlotte, NC and two great- grandsons, Patric, Jr. and Joshua. In addition to his parents and wife, Joe was also preceded in death by his son, Joseph Taylor, Jr.
Joe received a bachelor's degree from Kentucky State University and a master's degree from Indiana State Teacher's College. He served for a short time as a public-school teacher before starting to work with the Federal Prison system. He spent his career serving in the Federal system as an educator.
Joe was a member of First Baptist Church since 1963. He was a devoted Bible scholar who taught Sunday School on a regular basis up into his 90's. Joe served as the teacher for the Homebuilders Sunday School class and was a cherished mentor for many young people in the congregation, sharing his humble understandings of life and faith. His deep and abiding trust in Christ was evident in the conversations Joe had with all ages within the congregation. Joe was also a member of The Kiwanis Club of Terre Haute and was a 32nd Degree Mason.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 PM, Thursday, January 18, 2018 at the First Baptist Church, 4701 E. Poplar St., with the pastoral staff from the church officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 4701 E.
