Johnny P. Dicks, 91, of Terre Haute died peacefully in his sleep on January 27, 2016 at 5:00 a.m. He was born October 28, 1924 in Terre Haute the youngest son of Joseph and Sylvia (Myers) Dicks who came to the United States in 1905 from their native Romania. He graduated from Glenn High School Class of 1943. Johnny served in the U.S. Army during World War II and grew up on the Eastside of Terre Haute on the property now known as John G. Dobbs Memorial Park. On February 14, 1947 he married Anna Jean (Hammond) Dicks, who passed away on September 6, 2009.
Johnny was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers and worked for the U.S. Postal Service retiring in 1984. Previously he worked as a correctional officer for the Federal Bureau of Prisons also at Terre Haute. Following retirement, he enjoyed the company of his family, especially his grandchildren.
Johnny voluntarily gave up his Farmers Deferment from military service so that he could serve his country like his older brothers. He served with the 7th Armored Division during the German Campaign and received the Purple Heart for wounds received in Germany in April 1945.
Survivors include his daughter, Deborah Vandivier and her husband Sam as well as grandchildren, Jason and Jennifer of Indianapolis, as well as several nieces. He was also preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Joseph, Ameral, and Victor; and sisters, Sylvia, Lenna, and Annie.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, January 30, 2016 in Callahan Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street, with Reverend Chiyona Bourne officiating. Entombment will be in Roselawn Memorial Park with military services. Visitation is scheduled prior to services from 9:00 11:00 A.M. on Saturday.
