John F. Sweet

John F. Sweet, 93, of Terre Haute passed away on January 10, 2018 in his residence at Bethesda Gardens of Terre Haute. He was born November 19, 1924 in Anderson, IN to John and Susie Sweet.

After graduating from State High school in Terre Haute, John served his country as a Radio Repairman in the US Army in the European Theatre during WWII. His decorations include Carbine Sharpshooter badge, Combat Infantryman badge, EAME Theater Ribbon w/1 Bronze star, Good Conduct, and Victory Medal. After his discharge in 1945, John enrolled at Indiana State College where he obtained a Bachelor's degree. While pursuing his degree, John served as Student Manager on the men's basketball team, including the 1948 Runner-up team, and the 1950 Division I NAIA National Championship team. The 1950 championship team was elected to the ISU basketball Hall of Fame in 2000. John worked for many years at Merchants National Bank in the Loan and Trust Departments. After retirement, he continued to live and work independently as a tax preparer until shortly before being diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2014.

John enjoyed fishing, gardening, watching sports especially ISU and Celtics basketball. His favorite thing of all was seeing smiles on the faces of his family, friends, and caregivers.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Norma Jean, sister-in-law Margie Fries; his parents; and siblings, Charles, Dale, Nora, Helen, Dorothy, and Thelma.

Survivors include his son, Larry; granddaughter, Kaley Herrera; and great grandchildren, Alma, Kourtney, and Ashton, niece Michelle Phelps, nephew Ken Fries, nieces Carol Siverly, Laura Hale, Lisa Smith, Cheryl Auler, and many great nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to his caregivers Ms. Judy Lowe, the staff at Cannon Inn, and the staff at Bethesda Gardens Memory Care unit.
