John S. Newlin born on May 4, 1947 passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by loved ones on August 16, 2023. John S. was born to John T. and Marjorie A. McCandless Newlin in Terre Haute, IN. John was proceeded in death by his mother, Marjorie A. McCandless Newlin. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Kristina Kriston Newlin; 2 children: Kathryn N. Smith and husband, Jeffrey S. Smith, John K. Newlin and wife, Carolyn M. Newlin. Also surviving are five grandchildren: Ella Kriston Smith, Stewart Bryan Smith, Grayson Charles Smith, Veronica Kriston Newlin, and John Rocco Newlin. He is also survived by his father, John T. Newlin, brother, Thomas C. Newlin, and his wife, Laurice Newlin, sister, Sally A. Newlin, nephews and their wives: T.C. Newlin and Taleen Newlin, Christopher Newlin and Jenny Newlin, and Brian Newlin and Mandi Newlin. He is also survived by great nephews and a great niece, cousins, and several other relatives and dear friends.
John S. was a 1961 graduate of St. Patrick’s Grade School, a 1965 graduate of Schulte High School, a 1969 graduate of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (BS Mechanical Engineering), and a 1971 graduate of Indiana University (MBA). In 1971, he began his professional career with Babcock and Wilcox in Barberton, Ohio. He was later employed by Akron Brass in Wooster, Ohio. In 1978 he relocated to Terre Haute, IN, and joined Newlin-Johnson Co. Inc. During his career at Newlin-Johnson, he obtained his MAI Real Estate Appraisal designation in 1985. He also he served as president of Newlin-Johnson Co. Inc., president of the Terre Haute Board of Realtors, president of the Indiana Chapter of the American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers, and director and president of the IN Real Estate Appraisers Board of the State of Indiana. He was president of Progress Building Corp., president of Canew, Inc. and C & N, Inc. and a board member of North Acres Development Co. He was also a consultant and advisor to 1683, LLC.
John S. was a member and president of the Terre Haute City Council from 1988 to 2000. He was a lifelong parishioner of St. Patrick’s Parish, where he served as president of the Parish Council. He served as president of the Mental Health Association Board. He was past president and member of Kiwanis Club of Terre Haute for 45 years. He was a graduate of Leadership Terre Haute. He was a member of the Strawberry Hill Cannoneers and the Sycamore Club.
John S. was the middle linebacker for the Schulte Class of 1965 undefeated football team. He was an avid skier and golfer, ran four marathons, and attended over 60 Indianapolis 500 races. He enjoyed ski trips out west, as well as vacationing with his family and friends in Hilton Head Island, SC and St. George Island, FL. He was one of the most sought after oyster shuckers in the state of Indiana.

Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home. Visitation will be on Monday, August 21, 2023 from 4:00 - 7:30 pm at Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home - 605 S. 25th Street, Terre Haute, IN 47803. A rosary will be recited at 7:30 pm following the visitation. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, August 22, 2023 at 11:00 am at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church - 1807 Poplar Street, Terre Haute, IN 47803. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
