John Vincent Klug

September 18, 1921 — March 27, 2017

John Vincent Klug, 95, of Terre Haute passed away Monday evening, March 27, 2017. He was born September 18, 1921 in Terre Haute to Martin Klug and Marie Hahn Klug.

Survivors include his loving wife of 66 ½ years, Marilyn Smudde Klug; five children, James Klug, Mary Beth (David) Bauer, Dan (Janna) Klug, Richard Klug and Janet (Michael) Rowe; thirteen grandchildren, Joshua (Jenna) Bauer, Brittney Bauer, Christa Bauer, Evan Bauer, Alexis Klug, Zachary Klug, Jared Klug, Jordan Klug, Janel Klug, Bradley Rowe, Justin Rowe, Lauren Rowe and Sarah Rowe; and one great-grandchild, Paxton David Bauer. Also surviving are his sister, Rita Klug of Indianapolis; two brothers-in-law, Glenn (Mary) Smudde and Roy (Carol) Smudde; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by sisters, Helen Riedel, Justine Schinkle, Mary Lu Tarwater and Martha Klug; brothers, Maurice Klug, Joseph Klug and Raymond Klug; infant siblings, Martin Klug and Paul Klug; and two brothers-in-law, Dr. Carl Smudde and Donald Smudde.

After graduating from Wiley High School, John served in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a B-25 Assistant Crew Chief in North Africa, Corsica, Italy and Germany. After the war, he returned home and graduated from Indiana State University in 1951. John worked for IBEW Electrical Union Local 725 for 35 years before his retirement.

John loved his farm in Prairieton, which was his grandfather Hahn's. It was in the family for four generations and now his sons, Richard and Dan, continue farming. One of his favorite pastimes was playing Euchre with his family and friends. John was a member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church for over 55 years and was a life-time member of the Knights of Columbus and VFW Post #972.

Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Saturday, April 1, 2017 in St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 2405 South 7th Street, with Father Dan Bedel officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery with Military Honors provided by VFW Post #972. Visitations are scheduled for Friday from 5:00-7:30 PM with a Rosary to take place at 7:00 PM in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street, and on Saturday from 10:00-11:00 AM in the church. Memorial contributions, if so desired, may be made to St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 2405 South 7th Street, Terre Haute, IN 47802.
