JOHN ANDREW CHERVENKO, JR. John Andrew Chervenko, Jr., 94, of Terre Haute passed away early Saturday morning, December 27, 2014. He was a wood pattern maker for Gwin Brothers Pattern Works Company. John was born May 8, 1920 in Terre Haute to John Andrew Chervenko, Sr. and Clara Elizabeth Kosarko Chervenko. His wife, Marcilena Rose Saracin Chervenko, preceded him in death in 2008. Survivors include three daughters, Patty Bauer of Terre Haute, Rose Johnson of Carmel, IN and Susan Chervenko of Terre Haute; two grandchildren, Amber Johnson and Alex Johnson both of Carmel, IN; two sisters-in-law, Joan Chervenko and Norma Chervenko both of Terre Haute; and many nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Julia Chervenko; two brothers, Frank Chervenko and Alex Chervenko; and two sisters, Elizabeth Chervenko and Mary Chervenko. John was a graduate of Gerstmeyer High School. He joined the Marine Corps on October 22, 1941 during World War II and was assigned to the VMF 121 Squadron, F4F3 fighter planes. John participated in the defense of Guadalcanal Island during the period of October 1942- December 1942, and the invasion of Peleliu Island from August 1944- October 1944. During his four year enlistment he attained the rank of Master Technical Sergeant. John was a member of Joseph A. Bray Marine Corps League Detachment 471 and Lawton Byrum Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #972. Funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 Noon, Wednesday, December 31, 2014 in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street. Burial will be in Highland Lawn Cemetery with Military Graveside Honors provided by Marine Corps League Det. 471. Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday from 4:00-7:00 P.M. and also on Wednesday from 11:00 A.M. - 12:00 Noon.
