JoAnna Metzger, of Terre Haute, Indiana passed away Thursday, February 3, 2022 at Union Hospital. She was born on December 29, 1929, in Greene County, Indiana to Ned and Elsie Spinks of Bloomfield, Indiana.
She graduated from Bloomfield High School. After graduation, she moved to Terre Haute to attend Indiana Business College; upon graduating she joined the law office of Robert McPeak as a legal secretary. On October 23, 1954, she married the love of her life, Charles W. Metzger at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church.
JoAnna was a devoted wife and mother. When her children were young, JoAnna joined St. Patrick’s School as a volunteer librarian, sharing her love of books and reading with the students for almost thirty years. During the school-age years, JoAnna and Charles made the summers special; starting with Indy 500 race activities throughout May, and then a vacation on Lake Michigan later in life, she especially loved spending the winter months in California with her daughters and their families.
JoAnna was actively involved in her community and volunteered throughout her life. She served as PTO President, a Girl Scout Leader, and was active in the Women’s Department Club. Later in her life, she enjoyed volunteering at the Area 7 Agency on Aging and Disabled. In 2010, JoAnna was recognized with the Golden Hoosier Award for her service to the Terre Haute community, one of the highest honors given by the State of Indiana to seniors.
JoAnna was preceded in death by her parents, Elsie and Ned Spinks and her husband, Charles W. Metzger. She is survived by her four children and seven grandchildren; Elizabeth Cox (Randy) of Las Vegas, NV, William Metzger (Anita) of Indianapolis, IN and their three children, [Jessica, Sophia and Christopher], Hank (Liz) Metzger of Terre Haute, IN, and their two children [Ellie and Luke] and Mary (Kevin) Goldsack of Burbank, CA and their two children [Katie and Dylan].
The family is especially grateful for the loving care JoAnna received from home healthcare aids and in her final months at Providence Health Care at St. Mary of the Woods. Her smile, positive spirit and outlook on life will be missed by all.
Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 12:05 PM, Friday, February 11, 2022 at St. Benedict Catholic Church, 111 S. 9 th St., Terre Haute, with Father Martin Day, OFM Conv. officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service at St. Benedict from 10:30 am to 12:00 noon. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25 th Street. Out of an abundance of caution, face masks are required.
