Joan Hubbard, 68, of Kansas City, MO, died peacefully in her home on October 30, 2020. Born March 1, 1952, in Terre Haute, IN, to Marshall and Anne Hubbard, Joan grew up a proud Honey Creek High School Honey Bee before moving to Columbia, MO, where she graduated from Stephens College with a degree in elementary education. She spent the rest of her life in her adopted hometown of Kansas City, in teaching and banking, before retiring and devoting her time to the Folly Theater where she coordinated the volunteer usher program. Joan loved Kansas City with all its fountains, and never missed a Chiefs game (“Chiefs, Chiefs, Chiefs!”) – she spent the last years of her life enjoying her amazing view of the city skyline and Union Station from her 20th floor home.
Joan’s life was a full and happy one. She prioritized time with loved ones – numerous Blues Cruises, gatherings with The Wild Women, countless trips to see family in Indiana, Minnesota, and Florida – and enthusiastically pursued an eclectic range of hobbies and passions. She loved feeding fish off the dock at her lake house; burning leaf piles in the fall; chasing down a “Dogfood” sandwich with a can of beer as the sun came up on Race Day; rolling out the homemade dough for Christmas sugar cookies. She was a lifelong Indy racing fan, an exceptionally talented – and generous - knitter (her lovingly-crafted Christmas stockings will be hung on mantles around the world every holiday season, and her colorfully-patterned socks will warm many a foot for years to come). She was fiercely loyal to her friends and family, a group whose numbers expanded to include numerous “adopted daughters,” The Wild Women, and her two Arie’s; she cared deeply for her volunteer ushers at the Folly, and loved her cats as her children.
Joan endured her cancer journey with perseverance, humor, and positivity, becoming fast-friends with all her doctors, nurses, and caregivers. She was unfailingly kind to all and will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
Joan is survived by two brothers – Ross Hubbard, and Ward (Rosemary) Hubbard; her sister Janet (Keith) Anderson; four nieces, Claire Anderson Bowlby, Allison Anderson Schwindeman, Courtney Hubbard and Anne Hubbard; one nephew, Marshall Anderson; and one great-nephew; extended family Ruth and Gordon Itamura, her cats Bianca and Phoenix, and her forever friend Lou.
Due to Covid-19, no services will be held. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to a charity of your choice in Joan’s memory. The family would like to thank you for your Contribution.
