James K. Tanner, Jr., 76, of Terre Haute passed away Tuesday afternoon, April 13, 2021. He was a retired Air Traffic Controller for the Federal Aviation Administration having worked at Terre Haute Regional Airport Hulman Field. Jim was born June 29, 1944 in Lowville, New York to James K. Tanner, Sr. and Elizabeth Mary Alexander Tanner.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Margaret Reynolds Tanner; four children, Jimmy Tanner (Brenda) of Joshua, TX, Alicia Hoover (Ryan) of Terre Haute, Ashley Tanner of Terre Haute and Douglas Tanner (Sara) of Kokomo, IN; and nine grandchildren, Oistin, Lennon, Bostyn, Ryder, Lyric, Addilyn, Avery, Alayna and Aubrey. Also surviving are his five sisters, Mary Purdy, Patsy Tanner, Jeannie Ray (Mike), Margaret Merrick (Rob) and Susan Kaufman (Tony); father-in-law, Dwight Glenn Jones; sister-in-law, Laura Goldman (Joe); and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Jim was a graduate of Pleasure Ridge Park High School in Louisville, KY and attended Indiana State University. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War having served with the United States Air Force. Jim was a very active member of St. Joseph University Parish where he was a former finance chairman, worked on the restoration committee and volunteered with the Johah Fish Fry. For Jim, baseball was a very big part of his life as a participant in both baseball and softball, founded the Terre Haute Senior Men’s Baseball League in 1991 and was a huge New York Yankees fan. Additionally, he enjoyed golfing, loved music and was an accomplished pianist. He was an avid coach of his children’s sports teams and was a member of Wayne Newton American Legion Post #346.
Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, April 21, 2021 in St. Joseph University Parish, 113 South 5 th Street, with Friar Savio Manavalan officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday from 5:00-8:00 PM in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25 th Street.
