James E. Sullivan, 98, of Terre Haute passed away early Saturday morning, July 14, 2018. He was a prominent Terre Haute attorney having been a partner in the law firm of Cox, Zwerner, Gambill & Sullivan for 57 years before his retirement in 2014. Jim was born November 6, 1919 in Franklin, PA to John and Katherine Sullivan. His wife, Margaret Tiel Eggbeer Sullivan, preceded him in death in 2009.
Survivors include three sons, David W. Sullivan and his fiancé, Jaime Frey, of Terre Haute, Jeffrey M. Sullivan and his wife, Ruthanne, of Indianapolis, and Kevin L. Sullivan and his wife, Joy, of Barrington, IL; two daughters-in-law, Janeen Sullivan and Colleen Ferry Sullivan; and his sister, Joan Shupe of Wellesley, MA. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Dawn Duschel, Erika Sullivan (Dave), Kelly Sullivan, Brian Sullivan, Justin Sullivan (Krissy), Ryan Sullivan, Caitlin Sullivan, Patrick Sullivan (Colleen) and Kyle Sullivan; three great-grandchildren, Adam, Skylar, and baby on the way; bonus grandchildren, Zoe Frey and Emerson Frey; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by a son, James E. Sullivan, Jr.; and a sister, Margaret "Peg" Keith.
Jim received both his bachelor's degree and law degree from the University of Notre Dame. He served in the United States Navy during the Invasion of Normandy in World War II and also served during the Korean War. Jim was a member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church and was a member of the American Bar Association as well as the Terre Haute Bar Association, The Indiana State Bar Association, and The Florida Bar. He also served on the Boards of many local civic and community organizations.
Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 3:00 PM, Thursday, July 19, 2018 at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 2405 S 7th St., with Father Rick Eldred officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled prior to services on Thursday from 1:00-3:00 PM in the church.
