James Howard Schroeder, 92, of Terre Haute passed away Saturday, March 19, 2016 at Meadows Manor East. He was born April 13, 1923 in Monroe, Michigan to George and Katherine (Kuns) Schroeder.
Survivors include his loving wife, Virginia Cousino Schroeder; three daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie Steve Gosnell of Evansville, IN, Nancy Richard Maldonado of Fishers, IN and Cindy Rob Finn of Ft. Wayne, IN; grandchildren, James (Danielle) Gosnell, Tim (Emily) Gosnell, Kyle (Brenna) Finn, Taylor Finn, Spencer Maldonado and Morgan Maldonado; and great-grandchildren, Braelyn Rosaline Finn, and Gershom Gosnell. Also surviving are 2 sisters-in-law, Lillian Schroeder of Monroe, MI and Mary Cousino Morrin of Oregon, OH; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Higgs Berning and a brother, Louis Schroeder.
Jim was raised on a farm in Monroe the youngest of 3 children. His father passed away when Jim was 13 years old. He was a 1940 graduate of Monroe High School and served in the United States Army from 1943 -1945. While in the Army, he was stationed in the Pacific Theater of operations for 23 months. After the war, Jim continued his education graduating from the University of Toledo in 1950 with a bachelors degree in Industrial Engineering.
Their romance began when Jim drove Virginia Cousino home from a party, leading to 68 devoted years of marriage.
Jims working career as a young man began delivering block ice. He worked for Ford Motor Co.- Monroe Plant and for River Raisin Paper Co. In 1960, Jim and Virginia moved to Indiana where Jim worked for 28 years for Weston Paper and Wabash Fibre Box retiring in 1988 as a production manager.
His memberships include St. Benedict Catholic Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2153, American Legion Post #104, Sycamore Country Club and Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks lodges in Terre Haute, Florida and Monroe, MI where he was a Past Exulted Ruler. Jims passions were Michigan sports especially University of Michigan football, black walnut ice cream and looked forward to being a yearly snow-bird. It was his priority in having a well manicured yard. He always found time to be a friend to the friendless. Being the father of 3 daughters, Jim looked forward to welcoming his 3 sons-in-law into the family. He found great enjoyment in encouraging and guiding his 6 grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 12:05 P.M. Tuesday, March 29, 2016 in St. Benedict Church, 111 South 9th Street, with Father Martin Day officiating. Visitation is scheduled for Monday, March 28th from 4:00-8:00 P.M. with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 P.M. in Callahan Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street. Burial will take place at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, March 30th in Roselawn Memorial Cemetery in LaSalle, Michigan.
