Imogene McConkey Fuqua, 96, of Terre Haute passed away Friday evening, April 8, 2016 in Providence Healthcare at St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She was born March 3, 1920 in Sandford, Indiana to Charles David McConkey and Bertha Barnhart McConkey.
Imogene married Maurice N. Fuqua, an engineer on the Pennsylvania Railroad, in June 1941. They lived in Terre Haute for eight years until building a home in Sandford where they operated the Fuqua Hardware Store for many years. Maurice passed away in 1992.
Survivors include a daughter, Vicki Reber of Sanford, IN; a son, Gary Fuqua and his wife, Bobbie, of Kingsport, TN; 5 grandchildren, Greg Vermillion (Miriam), Kim Thralls (Fred), Brad Reber (Kim), Brandt Fuqua (Shelley) and Brandi Westrom (Fred); 7 great-grandchildren, Jessica Thralls (Seth), Jena Robertson (Easton), Ashley Sereno (Casey), Michael Vermillion, Nara Westrom, Ava Westrom and Celeste Harrison; two great-great-grandchildren, Vivian Sereno and Waylon Robertson; 3 nieces; and several great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents and her husband, Imogene was also preceded in death by two older brothers, Leon (Beulah) McConkey and Max (Billie) McConkey; a brother-in-law, Vernon (Georgia) Fuqua; a niece; and two nephews.
Imogene was a graduate of Fayette High School and attended Sanford Methodist Church and Emmanuel United Methodist Church in rural West Terre Haute. She was a 50 year member in the Ladies Auxiliary of the Sandford Volunteer Fire Department; a member of the New Goshen and later West Terre Haute Chapter #428 Order of Eastern Star; a member of the Zorah Shrine Honored Ladies; and a 35 year member of Badoura Temple #23 Daughters of the Nile and Badoura Patrol.
Funeral services will take place at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, April 16, 2016 in Callahan Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street, with Reverend Carter Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is scheduled for Friday, April 15th from 5:00-8:00 P.M. with a Daughters of Nile Memorial Service at 7:00 P.M., in the funeral home.
