Hugh Thomas Cummins, Sr.

October 4, 1924 — October 22, 2015

Hugh Thomas Cummins, Sr., 91, of Terre Haute passed away at his home, Thursday evening, October 22, 2015 surrounded by his loving family. He was the former owner of The Apple House, Inc., now operated by his sons, Tom and Ryan Cummins. Tom was born October 4, 1924 in Decatur, IL to Harlan Hugh Cummins and Edna Marie Burwell Cummins. He served in the United States Army, 102nd Division, in the European Theater during World War II. During his service, Tom was awarded the Bronze Star for bravery in action and the Purple Heart for severe wounds he sustained in a German artillery bombardment of his unit in November of 1944. Upon being discharged from the Army, Tom attended Indiana University and graduated in 1949 with a degree in Business. After graduation, he moved to Denver, Colorado to enter the real estate business and it was there that he met his wife of 63 years, Marie "Tracey" Cummins. She was a dance instructor for Arthur Murray Studios and he came in for lessons. It turned out he signed up for a lifetime course with his "beautiful Tracey" or as he also fondly called her, "My Sugardoodle". After they were wed on April 19, 1952, they returned to Terre Haute and Tom joined his father at The Apple House, Inc. Tom is survived by his loving wife, Marie T. "Tracey" Cummins; sons, Tom and wife, Nancy, and Ryan and wife, Mary Ruth, all of Terre Haute, Neil and wife, Jane of Lake Forest, IL, and Andrew and wife, Shannon, of Portland, OR; and daughters, Mary Wolf and husband, Mike, of Minneapolis, MN and Patsy Wilson and husband, Jerry, of Buffalo, NY. He is also survived by three sisters, Julia Braun of Terre Haute, Mary Sparks of Albany, CA and Janet Dewar of Indianapolis; a brother, Robert Cummins of Terre Haute; and several nieces and nephews. He adored his 14 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren whose lives were enriched by their Grandpa and Grammy. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Dale Edwin Cummins; and two sisters, Barbara Ann Blansette and Peggy Lou Corliss. Tom was a long-time member of St. Patrick Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 9:00 A.M. Tuesday, October 27, 2015 in St. Patrick Catholic Church, 1807 Poplar Street, with Father Rick Ginther officiating.
